Whitey Ford allowed Casey Stengel to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
at Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers by the
score of 3 to 1.

Detroit never recovered after New York took the lead in the 7th inning plating
an isolated run utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Joe
Collins lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 4th of the season). New York had
only 5 hits for the afternoon.

Ford(3-1), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Steve
Gromek(3-3) was given the loss. He pitched 8 innings and surrendered 5 hits
and 2 walks.

With this win, New York has a 15-10 record. They have been 7-3 lately. Not
able to get much going in recent weeks, Detroit is 2-8 of late and now has an
overall record of 11-16.
