Roger Craig pitched a 3 hitter as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Milwaukee

Braves by a score of 8 to 1 at County Stadium.

Brooklyn wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they

tallied 2 runs on 1 hit. That early run support was enough for Craig(2-1)

and Brooklyn. Brooklyn banged out 9 on the night.

Bob Buhl(12-5) suffered the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 7

runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.

NL Transaction August 2nd

The Milwaukee Braves called up 27 year old 1B Ben Taylor. Taylor was originally drafted by the Dodgers in 1944 and reached the majors in 1951 with the St Louis Browns. He spent a small portion of 1952 with the Tigers. Overall he has hit .243 with 3 homers and 6 RBI in 111 at bats. The Braves are hoping he will provide some bench depth with the loss of Joe Adcock to injury.

NL Transaction August 2nd

The Philadelphia Phillies activated 11 year veteran 2B Granny Hamner from the disabled list. Hamner, who has spent his entire career with the Phillies, had been placed on the DL July 6th. He was hitting .225 with one homer and 24 RBI before his injury. Trying to play through the pain, Hamner struggled to come any where close to last seasons .273 - 15 homer - 77 RBI year.

The Phillies sent down 26 year old SS Mickey Micelotta to make room for Hamner. Micelotta had been up last year for a short time going 1-2 with 2 walks and an RBI. This year he was 3-5 in 5 games.

NL Transaction August 1st

The New York Giants placed 27 year old 2B Davey Williams on the DL today with potentially career ending chronic back problems. He has spent all 6 of his major league seasons with the Giants. Last year he hit .221 with 12 homers and 56 RBI. This season he was at .208 with 2 homers and 23 RBI.

NL Transaction August 1st

The St Louis Cardinals placed relief pitcher Frank Smith on the DL today with a season ending arm injury. The 27 year old righthander was 3rd in the NL in saves last year with 17 for Cincinnati. He was 6-7 with a 3.20 ERA in 82 IP. Smith spent his first 5 seasons with the Redlegs before the Cardinals aquired him in the off season to shore up their bullpen. This year he was 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings before the injury.

NL Transaction August 1st

The Philadelphia Phillies signed former Phillie Eddie Waitkus as a free agent. The 34 year old 11 year veteran was the 1B on the 1950 pennant winning Whiz Kids. Waitkus spent last year (.299 with 2 homers and 21 RBI) and this season (.326-0-5) with Baltimore before his release on July 2nd. Phillies skipper Mayo Smith, unhappy with the production at 1B, plans on using Waitkus every day. If you have seen "The Natural" click on the story below.

For the story on the true "Natural": http://www.waitkus.org/1949.htm

NL Transaction August 1st

The Milwaukee Braves placed slugging 1B Joe Adcock on the DL today. In his 6th major league season the 27 year old Adcock is big piece of the puzzle for the 2nd place Braves. Last year he hit .265 with 20 homers and 62 RBI. This year he was at .267 with 19 bombs and 40 RBI in 304 plate appearances. It looks as if he will miss the rest of the season unless a quick recovery leads to some pinch hitting at the end of the year. Replacing him at 1B will be 34 year old George Crowe, who has not played a full season in the big leagues.

AL Transaction August 1st

San Diego (PCL) sold Buddy Peterson to the Chicago White Sox. Peterson is a 30 year old career minor leaguer. The White Sox are looking to add shortstop depth as Chico Carrasquel is not having a good season.

AL Transaction August 1st

The Baltimore Orioles released 13 year veteran Hank Majeski. The 38 year old Majeski was with his 2nd team this season having been aquired from Cleveland on June 27th. With the Orioles he was hitting .158 with a homer and 3 RBI in 43 plate appearances. Overall this season Hank was hitting .155 with a homer and 7 RBI in 99 plate appearances.
