Willard Schmidt carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning as the St. Louis

Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Braves 7 to 0 at County

Stadium.

Schmidt(9-4) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Milwaukee

hitters. He surrendered only 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings. The

right-handed Schmidt lost his chance for a no-hitter when Eddie Mathews

singled with one out in the 7th inning. St. Louis banged out 9 hits on the

afternoon.

Humberto Robinson(1-1) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around,

surrendering 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. When questioned about his

counterpart after the game, Robinson was lavish in his praise, 'It was

obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Schmidt

brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it

perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!
