NL Transaction August 14th

The Brooklyn Dodgers activated starting pitcher Carl Erskine and left fielder Sandy Amoros from the DL today.

Erskine, the 28 year old 8 year veteran, had peen placed on the DL July 28th. After a stellar 1954 campaign (16-11 3.98 ERA in 37 starts), Erskine has struggled this season at (8-8 5.30 ERA in 20 starts). The Dodgers are hoping the rest will have him ready to go for the stretch run.

Amoros, the 24 year old Cuban, is in his 3rd season with the Dodgers. Brooklyn has struggled (7-8) since Sandy was put on the DL July 25th. After struggling in his 1st full season in the big leagues (.241 - 8 HRS - 31 RBI in 91 games) last season Amoros could have been the Dodgers MVP in the 1st half of this year. In 83 games this year Amoros was hitting .311 with 9 homers, 48 RBI, and 58 runs scored.

Left fielder Roy Sievers ripped 2 homeruns and Bob Porterfield was able to

finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Fenway Park

as the Washington Nationals beat the Boston Red Sox 12 to 4.

Sievers was unconscious all day. The Boston fans hated to see him approaching

the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He smacked a three-run

homer in the 3rd inning, laced a single in the 4th inning and cleared the

bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 20th of the season) in the 8th inning.

Washington had a total of 16 hits for the game.

Porterfield(6-11) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 4 runs.

Willard Nixon(7-9) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 5 hits and

3 walks in 2 innings.

'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Sievers said. 'We

played well together as a team.'

Ralph Kiner had 3 hits, 2 homers, and 3 RBI as Cleveland hammers Kansas City 9-4.

Ralph Kiner launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Cleveland Indians

defeated the floundering Kansas City Athletics 9 to 3 at Municipal

Stadium.

Kiner was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided

much of the offense for the visitors. He laced a base-hit in the 1st inning,

bombed a two-run dinger in the 3rd inning and cracked a solo homerun (his

17th of the season) in the 4th inning. Cleveland totaled 9 on the night.

The victory was credited to Herb Score(15-5) who went 5 innings, allowing 2

runs. Sal Maglie got the save, his 1st. Art Ceccarelli(4-8) was the losing

pitcher. He allowed 3 homeruns in 3 and 2/3 innings of work.

Sandy Consuegra singled in the go ahead run in the 13th inning and pitched 3 effective innings for a 8-6 Chicago win over Detroit.

Bob Kennedy left the yard and had 3 RBI at Briggs Stadium where the Chicago

White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers in 13 innings by the score of 8 to 6.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Chicago came out on top

in the 13th inning. Kennedy opened up the inning nicely when he lined a

one-base hit. Chico Carrasquel came next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.

One out later, Sandy Consuegra stepped up to the plate and he slapped a

base-hit driving in a run. Consuegra took second on the throw. Nellie Fox

followed and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Although they

lost, Detroit did out-hit Chicago 19 to 16.

Consuegra(7-4) was the winner allowing 1 run in 3 innings. Babe Birrer(5-3)

was hit with the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs in 2 innings of work.
