Gus Zernial had 2 base hits as the Kansas City Athletics defeated the dreadful
Baltimore Orioles by the score of 7 to 6 at Memorial Stadium.
Mike Kume(1-2) was solid if not spectacular. He went 6 innings surrendering 8
hits and 3 walks. Baltimore had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Kume got help from Tom Gorman who earned his 14th save. The loss was charged
to Ed Lopat(5-10). He was touched for 11 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
Despite losing Paul Richards was optimistic after the game. 'We'll get over
this one. Sometimes the breaks fall your way, sometimes they don't. Any one
of a dozen little things go different, and we come out on top.'
Billy Hoeft pitches a 5 hit shutout as Detroit blanks Washington 9-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Fred Hatfield had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Griffith Stadium where the Detroit
Tigers beat the Washington Nationals 4 to 2.
Detroit did all of it's offensive work in the 4th inning scoring 4 runners on

the mood of the partisan fans when he laced a one-base hit which was good for
two runs. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.
The winning pitcher was Frank Lary(13-14) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings.
Lary got help from Dick Marlowe who was credited with his 1st save. Ted

One run was the difference at Yankee Stadium as the dominant Cleveland Indians
defeated the New York Yankees 6 to 5.

back in the 9th but they came up short.
Ray Narleski earned his 21st save. Bob Grim(6-3) was the losing pitcher in
relief. Casey Stengel was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure,
this kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all
professionals. We've been through this many times - it's the nature of the
game. We'll be fine - as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'

WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Les Moss blocked the plate, saving a run!
Frank Sullivan was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Boston Red Sox ballclub embarrassed the Chicago White
Sox by the count of 13 to 1.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Sammy White. He doubled in the 2nd inning, laced a single
knocking in a run in the 4th inning and lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run (his 13th of the season) in the 8th inning. Boston had many
opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.
The victory went to Sullivan(15-13) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Bob
Keegan(3-6) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 3
innings.
This win by Boston continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten
games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 79-61. Chicago
can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8
record over the last couple weeks.
Billy Goodman's walk off single rallied Boston over Chicago 2-1 and gave the Red Sox the doubleheader sweep.

Billy Goodman had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and George Susce came through with a
solid 8 innings as the Boston Red Sox rallied impressively to win in dramatic

scoring 2 runs. After an out was recorded, Grady Hatton started the attack
as he drew a walk. Jimmy Piersall stepped up next and he drew a walk. Eddie
Joost then drew a walk to load the bases. Goodman stepped in and he
delivered a base-hit giving Boston the win and sending the home town fans
into a frenzy. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th
inning.
The win went to Ellis Kinder(4-5) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Connie
