WEB GEMS- Top 9th: Chuck Diering robbed Mickey Vernon of an extra base hit.

Ed Lopat had a strong outing as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Washington

Nationals by a score of 4 to 0 at Memorial Stadium.

Baltimore jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2

runs on 3 hits. That was all the runs Lopat(6-10) needed. Baltimore rapped

out 11 hits for the afternoon.

Chuck Stobbs(6-12) was the losing pitcher. He allowed a few too many

baserunners giving up 11 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

Lopat was obviously very pleased with his performance in the aftermath of the

game, 'It was just one of those games where everything worked. My arm felt

great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three innings. I only hope

that I can do it again next time out!'

Larry Doby had 3 RBI as the Indians rallied to a 10-6 win over the Tigers.

The Washington Nationals came in to the game in quite a tailspin, but they

were able to snap their 5 game slide and edged the Baltimore Orioles in 17

innings at Memorial Stadium by the score of 3 to 2.

Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Washington came out

the victor in the 17th inning. After an out was recorded, Tony Roig doubled.

After another out, Pete Runnels stepped in and he lined a single scoring the

run. Washington rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.

The victory went to Dean Stone(13-8) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Erv

Palica(4-16) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no

walks in 3 innings.

Dave Philley's 2 run triple gives Baltimore a split of the doubleheader with Washington 2-1.

Hal Brown carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Baltimore Orioles

outscored the woeful Washington Nationals 2 to 1.

Brown(2-3) earned his pay with a solid performance for Baltimore. He went 6

and 1/3 innings surrendering 3 hits and 4 walks. The right-handed Brown lost

his no-hit bid when Mickey Vernon singled with one out in the 6th inning.

Washington made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the

needed runs across.

George Zuverink earned his 4th save. Webbo Clarke(1-1) suffered the loss. He

pitched 6 innings and surrendered 3 hits and 3 walks.

One run was the difference at Municipal Stadium as the Detroit Tigers defeated

the Cleveland Indians 4 to 3.

Steve Gromek(9-12) came through for Bucky Harris with an excellent relief

stint. He allowed just 2 hits and no walks in 3 innings and served up 2 'big

flies'. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Babe Birrer was credited with his 3rd save. Don Mossi(4-5) absorbed the loss

in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 1 hit in 2/3 of an inning.

Tom Gorman was great in relief and Vic Power blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI

as the Kansas City Athletics outscored the Chicago White Sox 14 to

10.

Chicago never recovered after Kansas City took the lead in the bottom of the

7th inning as they scored 5 runs on 2 base hits. The big moment was provided

by Joe Astroth who came through for the home fans when he electrified the

crowd with a Grand Slam home run (his 9th of the season). Chicago was not

lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate innings, yet victory

eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win

ballgames.

Gus Keriazakos(1-0) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Gorman

earned the save, his 16th. Al Papai(0-1) was the loser in relief. He

allowed 4 runs and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.

Grady Hatton went 4 for 5 with a double and home run leading the Red Sox over the Yankees 7-2.
