Jim Greengrass hit one over the fence at Forbes Field where the Philadelphia

Phillies beat the dreadful Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 2.



Philadelphia wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning plating an

isolated run. Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable

to push the needed runs across.



Herm Wehmeier(9-8) allowed 1 run in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Jack

Meyer was credited with his 8th save. Bob Friend(8-11) absorbed the loss.

He allowed 7 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.



With this win, Philadelphia has a 52-68 record. They have been 6-4 lately.

Pittsburgh has a record of 41-79, worst in the league after the loss.

Hank Aaron had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Chet Nichols completed the game without

help from the bullpen as the Milwaukee Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals by

a score of 4 to 2.



Milwaukee came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning

scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Andy Pafko keyed the

rally when he stroked a single. Eddie Mathews was next and he laid down a

sacrifice bunt. Aaron then smacked a single which scored a run. Johnny

Logan was up next and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. St.

Louis went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th.



Nichols(9-4), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Harvey

Haddix(10-10) was the loser. He pitched 9 innings allowing 9 hits and 5

walks.

Wally Post rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Cincinnati Redlegs

defeated the Chicago Cubs by a score of 6 to 5 at Crosley Field.



Post enjoyed a great evening at the plate. Every time he came up in the

latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He cleared the fences

for a two-run home run in the 1st inning, banged out a single in the 4th

inning and belted a three-run homer (his 31st of the season) in the 6th

inning. Chicago threatened in the 9th but Cincinnati was able to put down

the rally.



Johnny Klippstein(7-5) got the win allowing no runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Klippstein got help from Joe Nuxhall who earned his 2nd save. Bill

Tremel(1-1) was given the loss in relief.



'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Post said. 'Whenever I

would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

Johnny Podres tossed a complete game as the Brooklyn Dodgers topped the New

York Giants by a score of 5 to 1 at Polo Grounds.



Brooklyn took the lead for good in the top of the 4th inning scoring one

runner. Brooklyn managed 7 in their victory.



The winning pitcher was Podres(10-4) who allowed 1 run for the game. Ruben

Gomez(6-8) ended up with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of

work.














 

NL Transaction August 16th


The New York Giants called up 28 year old infielder Billy Gardner. Gardner was hitting .316 with a homer and 3 RBI when he was sent down on May 31st. Last year, his rookie season, Gardner hit .306 with 3 homers and 15 RBI in 116 plate appearances.

The Milwaukee Braves called up 23 year old catcher Bob Roselli today. Roselli was signed as an amateur free agent in 1950 by the then Boston Braves and has been working his way up the system since. Braves skipper Charlie Grimm hoped to have Roselli make his major league debut in todays game.

Don Larsen tossed a shutout at Fenway Park where the New York Yankees beat the

Boston Red Sox 5 to 0.



Bill Skowron was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine

day at their team's expense. He lifted one out of the park for a two run

home run (his 10th of the season) in the 2nd inning, delivered a single

scoring two baserunners in the 3rd inning and doubled in the 8th inning. New

York had 9 hits for the night.



Larsen(5-1) went the distance for the shutout. Frank Sullivan(12-10) ended up

with the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings.












 

George Kell had 2 hits and all 3 RBI as Chicago blanked Kansas City 3-0.

George Kell went yard and had 3 RBI at Comiskey Park where the Chicago White

Sox beat the Kansas City Athletics by the score of 3 to 0.



Connie Johnson(4-2) delivered a fine performance for Chicago. He surrendered

5 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings improving his ERA from 2.33 to 2.11.

Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.



Johnson got relief help from Dixie Howell who gained credit for his 9th save.

AL Transaction August 16th


The New York Yankees activated 25 year old righthander Bob Grim from the DL today. Grim, in his 2nd big league season, had been placed on the DL June 22nd. He was 6-1 with a 2.55 ERA in 71 innings and 11 starts until his injury. Last season, as a rookie, he was 9-12 with a 3.86 ERA in 201 innings. Skipper Casey Stengel plans on using Grim out of the bullpen for the rest of the year.
