At Yankee Stadium the phenomenal New York Yankees outscored the Kansas City

Athletics 5 to 2.



Bob Wiesler(5-0) had a solid outing for New York. He allowed 3 hits and 6

walks in 7 innings lowering his ERA from 4.54 to 4.20. Tommy Byrne was

perfect in relief and gained credit for his 2nd save.



Art Ditmar(4-9) was tagged with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 6

innings.












 

In his 1st start since being recalled Don Larsen throws a 4 hitter as New York pummells Kansas City 8-1. The Yankees drew 14 walks in the game.

Second baseman Gil McDougald connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI and Don

Larsen delivered 9 solid innings at Yankee Stadium as the spectacular New

York Yankees beat the pitiful Kansas City Athletics 8 to 1.



New York jumped on top to stay in the 5th inning when they scored 2 runs on 2

hits. The highlight belonged to McDougald who made the New York fans a happy

lot when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 7th of the

season). New York banged out 7 on the afternoon.



The victory was credited to Larsen(2-1) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.

Cloyd Boyer(6-4) was given the loss. His biggest problem was control as he

allowed 11 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Ike Delock was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete

game as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 11 to 3

at Fenway Park.



Boston set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring one runner.

Boston managed 14 in their victory.



The victory was credited to Delock(7-4) who went the distance, allowing 3

runs. Billy Hoeft(11-8) was the loser. He surrendered 10 hits and no walks

in 6 innings.



The Boston ballclub's record now stands at 55-48. With the loss, Detroit has

a record of 7-3 lately, 53-49 overall.












 

Jackie Jensen had 2 hits including a Grand Slam as the Red Sox thrash the Tigers 8-1 in the 1st of two games today.

Frank Sullivan went the distance and Jackie Jensen cleared three ducks from a

very crowded pond with a grand slam at Fenway Park where the Boston Red Sox

beat the Detroit Tigers 8 to 1.



Jensen helped send the fans home happy. He lined a base-hit in the 5th inning

and launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 20th of the season) in the 8th inning.

Boston rapped out 14 hits for the afternoon.



Sullivan(11-8) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Ned

Garver(11-6) absorbed the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 7 hits and 4

walks.

Al Rosen blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Cleveland Indians topped the

Baltimore Orioles by a score of 6 to 3 at Memorial Stadium.



Cleveland brought 3 runs across the plate in the top of the 5th inning. The

critical plate appearance was by Rosen who silenced the crowd when he clubbed

a three-run home run (his 22nd of the season). Cleveland had a total of 9

hits for the game.



The win was credited to Bob Feller(7-2) who went 6 innings allowing 3 runs.

Don Mossi got the save, his 5th. Ray Moore(5-12) took the loss.

Harry Byrd was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete

game as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Washington Nationals 2 to 1 at

Griffith Stadium.



In the top of the 6th inning Chicago scored 1 run. Jim Rivera stroked a

base-hit. Two outs later Jim Busby came up and he reached on an error

scoring the run. Washington proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the

9th.



The victory went to Byrd(11-5) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Spec

Shea(1-5) was given the loss. The winning ways continue for Chicago. They

now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. With this loss, Washington has a

3-7 record of late, 40-62 overall.

Jack Harshman came through with a solid 11 innings as the impressive Chicago

White Sox topped the Washington Nationals in 11 innings by a score of 4 to 0

at Griffith Stadium.



The run-column was full of goose eggs at the end of nine full innings.

Chicago won the game in the 11th inning. Chicago finished with 7 hits in the

victory.



For Harshman(9-5) it was his 4th shutout this year. Chuck Stobbs(5-8) suffered

the loss in relief. He gave up 4 hits and 1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings.



'Harshman pitched a gem of a game', Chuck Dressen recounted. 'He kept our

batters off balance the entire game.'












 

AL Transaction July 31st


The Boston Red Sox called up 22 year old lefty Frank Baumann today. Baumann, from St Louis, was signed as an Amateur frre agent in 1952 by the Red Sox. Pinky Higgins, the Boston skipper, plans to spot start Baumann.
