Sam Jones shutout New York, his 2nd straight blanking, while allowing the Chicago bullpen a day-off at Polo Grounds as the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Giants 3 to 0. Jones(8-8) gave Chicago a solid outing. He allowed only 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.38 to 3.16. Neither team managed to score after the 2nd inning. Jim Hearn(7-9) was hit with the loss. He surrendered only 3 runs and 6 hits in 9 innings. With this win, Chicago has a 43-44 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss New York now has a record of 43-42.

Vern Law completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled out a win over the Cincinnati Redlegs by a score of 3 to 1 at Forbes Field. Pittsburgh came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Roman Mejias led off and started the rally when he singled. Frank Thomas struck out, unable to help the rally. Dale Long then lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 13th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Pittsburgh had just 6 hits for the afternoon. Law(6-9) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Joe Nuxhall(10-6)ended up with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 8 and 1/3innings.


MILWAUKEE AT PHILADELPHIA

One run was the difference at Connie Mack Stadium as the Milwaukee Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5 to 4. Milwaukee won the game with a run in the 9th inning. After an out wasr ecorded, Bill Bruton smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 5th of theseason). Although they lost, Philadelphia did out-hit Milwaukee 12 to 9. Lew Burdette(7-7) allowed 4 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Chet Nichols gained credit for his 1st save. Murry Dickson(4-8) was given the loss.


ST. LOUIS AT BROOKLYN

Don Newcombe threw a complete game shutout at Ebbets Field as the indomitable Brooklyn Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 4 to 0. Newcombe(9-5) put on a good performance. He didn't give up much, just 8 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.30 to 3.08. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning. Tom Poholsky(1-4) was charged with the loss. With this win, Brooklyn has a league leading 57-29 record. They have been 7-3 lately. Harry Walker was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.'

Nl Transaction July 15th

The Brooklyn Dodgers sent down last years bullpen hero, 32 year old Jim Hughes. In his 4th year, Hughes was brilliant last year posting a (6-8) record with a 2.95 ERA and a major league best 25 saves. This season it has been a brutal struggle as Hughes has a (2-6) record with a 6.96 ERA and 6 saves. Dodger skipper Walter Alston is hoping Hughes can get it straightened out in Triple A.


















The Dodgers also sent down 29 year old outfielder Bob Borkowski. Borkowski was aquired from Cincinnati for Joe Black on June 9th. The 6 year veteran was hitting .171 with 1 RBI in 39 plate appearances. Last season he hit .258 with 12 RBI in 170 plate appearances for the Redlegs.





















Brooklyn called up rookie pitchers Don Bessent and Roger Craig to take those two spots on the roster. Bessent, a 24 year old righty, started the season in Brooklyn before being sent down on April 30th. In 9 innings he had no record and a 1.93 ERA.



















Craig a 25 year old righty from Durham, North Carolina, will be making his Major League debut in a scheduled start July 17th.

Center fielder Dave Pope had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Baltimore Orioles outscored the Kansas City Athletics 4 to 2. Jim McDonald(1-5) pitched a solid game. He went 5 innings surrendering 4 hits and 3 walks lowering his ERA from 4.66 to 4.10. Baltimore managed 8 in their victory. Harry Dorish recorded the save, his 4th. Bobby Shantz(1-9) took the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings.

Bob Turley allowed just 2 hits as the mighty New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians by the score of 4 to 1 at Municipal Stadium. New York brought 3 runs across the plate in the 4th inning when they had 3 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Gil McDougald who silenced Municipal Stadium as he smacked a three-run homer (his 5th of the season).New York managed only 5 on the afternoon. Turley(10-3), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. EarlyWynn(8-4) suffered the loss. He allowed 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

Sherm Lollar ripped 2 homeruns at Comiskey Park as the Chicago White Sox beat the Washington Nationals 5 to 4. Lollar helped send the fans home happy. He cracked a solo homerun in the 3rd inning, delivered a solo blast (his 7th of the season) in the 5th inning and lined a one-base hit in the 6th inning. Washington had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. The win went to Sandy Consuegra(4-2) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Dixie Howell was credited with his 4th save. Johnny Schmitz(5-7) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. 'You have to give Washington credit, they fought us tough to the end' Marty Marion said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'

AL Transaction July 15th

The Detroit Tigers sent rookie righthander Duke Maas to Triple A today. Maas, 26 years old, was (4-5) with a 4.17 ERA in 15 starts and 82 innings pitched. Tiger skipper Bucky Harris was heard saying that he expected the young man to be back but that Maas needed to work on his endurance. The young Tiger hurler was averaging less than 6 innings per start.

At Municipal Stadium the Baltimore Orioles ended a long winless drought and
outscored the pitiful Kansas City Athletics 9 to 6.

Baltimore took the lead for keeps in the 5th inning scoring 3 runs using 3
hits. After an out was recorded, Cal Abrams got things rolling when he drew
a walk. Dave Philley next to the plate and he doubled resulting in a run.
Gus Triandos then tripled plating one more runner. Hal Smith followed and he
doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Jim Wilson(6-8) was helped out
by George Zuverink who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 1st save.

Art Ceccarelli(4-6) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in
5 innings.

Art Ditmar threw a complete game shutout as the Kansas City Athletics defeated
the hapless Baltimore Orioles by the score of 4 to 0 at Municipal
Stadium.

Ditmar(4-6) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't give up
much, just 4 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Kansas City totaled 8 on the
afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Ray Moore(5-9). He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 6
innings.

BOSTON AT DETROIT

Ike Delock tossed a complete game at Briggs Stadium where the Boston Red Sox
beat the Detroit Tigers by the score of 3 to 2.

Boston brought 2 runs across the plate in the 6th inning. Detroit had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Delock(6-4), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Frank
Lary(5-11) was given the loss. Boston continued their winning ways, with
their streak now at 6 games and counting.

Right fielder Al Kaline slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at Briggs Stadium as
the Detroit Tigers came back dramatically to top the Boston Red Sox by the
score of 7 to 5.

Detroit erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning as
they scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. The highlight belonged to Kaline who made
the crowd happy when he blasted a two-run home run (his 20th of the season).
Detroit finished with 11 hits in the victory.

The victory went to Joe Coleman(2-0) who went 2 innings, allowing 1 run.
George Susce(3-4) was hit with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11
hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

'What a win!', Coleman said. 'These are the kind of games that stand out in
your mind at the end of a season.'

In a close game the New York Yankees got by the Cleveland Indians by the score
of 6 to 4.

Tommy Byrne(5-4) had a steady outing. He allowed 10 hits and 8 walks in 8 and
1/3 innings. New York had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Tom Morgan was credited with his 7th save. Bob Lemon(9-8) was the loser. He
surrendered 5 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.

'He gutted it out' Casey Stengel said of Byrne. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'

Catcher Sherm Lollar cracked a homer and had 3 RBI and Connie Johnson hurled a
fine complete game shutout at Comiskey Park as the Chicago White Sox, running on all cylinders, ripped the Washington Nationals by a large 10 to 0 margin. Johnson(2-1) put on a good performance. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 1.80 to 1.13. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again. Camilo Pascual(1-8) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the Chicago offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Right fielder Jim Rivera had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Comiskey Park where the Chicago White Sox beat the Washington Nationals 7 to 3. Chicago tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Rivera who made the crowd come alive when he delivered a base-hit plating two runs. Chicago had 14 hits overall, while Washington had 6. The win went to Dick Donovan(11-4) who allowed 1 run in 5 innings. Dixie Howell recorded the save, his 3rd. Ted Abernathy(4-4) absorbed the loss.

AL Transaction July 14th


The Washington Nationals recalled 25 year old infielder Jerry Snyder. Snyder was hitting .222 with 2 RBI in 27 AB's before being sent down May 17th. In his 4th season, Snyder hit .223 with 6 RBI in 157 AB's last year.

 

AL Transaction July 14th


Oakland, of the PCL, sold Hal Brown to the Baltimore Orioles. Brown, a 30 year old righthander, is in his 5th season and now his 3rd team. Last year with Boston, Brown was (1-2) with a 4.37 ERA over 117 innings. He will pitch mostly from the bullpen.



To make room the Orioles have sent down starting pitcher Duane Pillette. Pillette a 32 year old righty, was (8-13) with a 3.65 ERA over 25 starts and 180 innings for the Orioles last year. This season, struggling with arm problems, he is (0-2) with a 4.79 ERA in 5 starts and 21 innings pitched.

 

AL Transaction July 14th

The Detroit Tigers released Ferris Fain. Then the Cleveland Indians signed Ferris Fain as a free agent. Fain, a 34 year old firstbaseman, is in his 9th season and this will be his 4th team. Last year for the White Sox he hit .295 with 5 homers and 47 RBI over 80 games. This year for the Tigers he hit .284 with 2 homers and 12 RBI over 52 games. Five times in his career he has walked over 100 times. Al Lopez, the Indians manager, is planning on him backing up Vic Wertz.

 

AL Transaction July 14th


The Cleveland Indians traded Bill Wight to Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Hoot Evers. Wight, a 33 year old lefthander, is in his 9th season and now his 6th team. He was 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA in 24 innings for the Tribe this year and did not pitch last year. Baltimore skipper Paul Richards plans to insert Wight into the rotation.



Evers, a 34 year old outfielder, is in his 12th season. He will be playing for his 5th team over the last two seasons. Last year, for three teams, Evers hit .158 with 1 homer and 7 RBI in 76 AB's. This year for the Orioles he was hitting .220 with 7 homers and 16 RBI in 57 games. Indians manager Al Lopez figures to use Evers with Gene Woodling in left field.

 

AL Transaction July 14th


The Cleveland Indians activated firstbaseman Vic Wertz from the disabled list today. Wertz was hitting .203 with 8 homers and 30 RBI in 43 games when he was placed on the DL June 16th.




To make room rookie firstbaseman Joe Altobelli was sent to Triple A. Altobelli is hitting .206 with 2 homers and 7 RBI in 29 games.

Bob Rush tossed a complete game and Ernie Banks went yard and had 2 RBI as the
Chicago Cubs outscored the New York Giants 6 to 2.

Chicago took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on 1 hit.
The highlight belonged to Randy Jackson who silenced Polo Grounds as he
bombed a two-run dinger (his 10th of the season). Chicago had 10 hits for
the night.

Rush(9-8) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Ruben Gomez(5-4) was
tagged with the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 innings of work.

The Cincinnati Redlegs toppled the Pittsburgh Pirates by a 5 to 1 score at
Forbes Field.

Pittsburgh fell behind quickly as the Cincinnati offense came through in the
first inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. The early run support
proved sufficient for Jackie Collum(4-2) and Cincinnati. That was all the
run support Collum required. Both teams finished the game with 8 hits.

Hersh Freeman recorded his 6th save. Max Surkont(4-9) was hit with the loss.
The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 48-33. Pittsburgh has a
record of 27-61, worst in the league after the loss.

Eddie Mathews lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI and Bob Buhl was
able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the
Milwaukee Braves staged a dramatic comeback over the Philadelphia Phillies by
a score of 7 to 5 at Connie Mack Stadium.

Philadelphia was unable to recover after Milwaukee went ahead in the 2nd
inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. Hank Aaron tripled. Bobby Thomson
came to the plate and slapped a one-base hit scoring the run. Milwaukee
rapped out 9 hits for the night.

Buhl(11-3) lasted until the end allowing 5 runs for the win. Herm
Wehmeier(6-5) ended up with the loss. He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings and
surrendered 9 hits and 5 walks.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Buhl, 'I got burned on a
couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

The spectacular Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score
of 4 to 1 at Ebbets Field.

Brooklyn took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning when they scored 2 runs on
3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Johnny Podres(9-2) and
Brooklyn. That was all the run support Podres required. St. Louis proved to
be no trouble in the 9th.

Clem Labine earned the save, his 4th. Larry Jackson(5-9) took the loss. He
was knocked around by Brooklyn, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.
