Ray Crone was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete

game and Johnny Logan lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI at

County Stadium where the very talented Milwaukee Braves beat the Chicago Cubs

7 to 6.

Logan provided much of the offense. He lofted a three-run bomb (his 14th of

the season) in the 1st inning, delivered a base-hit in the 3rd inning and

doubled in the 7th inning. Chicago threatened in the 9th but their rally

came up short.

The victory was credited to Crone(7-6) who went the distance, allowing 6 runs.

Sam Jones(12-13) was given the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 6 hits and 2

walks in 2 innings.

'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Stan Hack said. 'We did what

we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'

Johnny Podres pitched 6 strong innings at Connie Mack Stadium where the

dominant Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3 to

0.

Brooklyn won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on

2 hits. After an out was recorded, Jim Gilliam began the Brooklyn spurt when

he was hit by a pitch. Sandy Amoros followed and he lined a one-base hit.

Frank Kellert then doubled driving home two runs. Don Hoak came up and he

would hit into a fielders choice scoring the final run of the inning. For

the game Brooklyn out-hit Philadelphia 7 to 4.

The victory went to Clem Labine(9-4) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Don

Bessent got the save, his 1st. Murry Dickson(9-10) was the losing pitcher.

He surrendered 3 runs and 7 hits in 9 innings.

NL Transaction August 20th

The Philadelphia Phillies signed Fred Van Dusen as an amateur free agent (bonus baby). Van Dusen is an 18 year old outfielder from Jackson Heights, New York.

NL Transaction August 20th

Oakland (of the PCL) sold Al Gettel to the St. Louis Cardinals. Gettel, a 7 year veteran, hasn't pitched in the big leagues since the 1951 season. The 37 year old righthander will be immediately put in the bull pen according to skipper Harry Walker.

To make room the Cardinals sent 30 year old righthander Brooks Lawrence to triple A. Lawrence had an outstanding rookie year in 1954, (10-5) with a 3.62 ERA in 18 starts with 10 complete games. This season he has struggled, (4-4) with a 5.36 ERA in 91 innings pitched.
