AL Transaction August 25th

The Cleveland Indians placed 30 year old 1B Vic Wertz on the DL and he will miss the rest of the season. In his 9th season, 2nd with Cleveland, Wertz was hitting .217 with 14 homers and 52 RBI in 291 plate appearances. Wertz was aquired mid 1954 from Baltimore and played a key role in the Tribe's championship run.

To replace him on the roster Cleveland called up 25 year old infielder Rudy Regalado. In his 2nd season, both with Cleveland, Regalado will be making his first appearance of the 1955 season. Last year he hit .202 with 3 homers and 19 RBI in 207 plate appearances.

Whitey Ford whitewashed Detroit and first baseman Joe Collins cracked 2

homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Detroit Tigers were badly beaten by the amazing

New York Yankees, 13 to 0.

Collins was unconscious all day. The Detroit fans hated to see him

approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He lifted

one out of the park for a two run home run in the 4th inning, lofted a

three-run 'big-fly' (his 18th of the season) in the 6th inning and delivered

a one-base hit in the 9th inning. New York had 12 hits for the afternoon.

For Ford(17-5) it was his 4th shutout this year. Steve Gromek(6-10) ended up

with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 5 and 1/3 innings of

work.

The New York ballclub's record now stands at 78-46. With the loss, Detroit

has a record of 5-5 lately, 65-59 overall.

Bill Wight tossed a complete game at Comiskey Park where the Baltimore Orioles

beat the Chicago White Sox by the score of 4 to 3.

Baltimore scored all of the necessary runs in the 5th inning scoring 4 runners

on 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Willie Miranda who silenced the

stadium when he ripped a base-knock which was good for two runs. Chicago

threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Wight(4-4), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The loss was

charged to Harry Byrd(13-8). When questioned, Paul Richards remarked, 'It's

been a while since a win felt this good - heck, it's been a while since we

had a win period!'

Billy Pierce struck out 13 on a 9 hitter as Chicago takes the first of two with Baltimore 3-2.
