Ted Kluszewski launched 2 homeruns and Joe Nuxhall went 9 strong innings as

the Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 0

at Crosley Field.



Pittsburgh never recovered after Cincinnati took the lead in the bottom of the

3rd inning plating an isolated run. That early run support was enough for

Nuxhall(16-15) and Cincinnati. Cincinnati banged out 8 hits on the night.



Bob Friend(9-13) suffered the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 8 innings.

'Nuxhall took our guys to school' Fred Haney said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch

for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'












 

Sam Jones tossed a 7 hitter as the Cubs score a one run win over the Phillies 3-2.

Randy Jackson had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Sam Jones allowed Stan Hack to

rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Chicago Cubs beat the

Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 3 to 2.



Chicago drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning

scoring 2 runners on 4 hits. Chicago rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.



The winning pitcher was Jones(15-16) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Murry

Dickson(10-13) ended up with the loss. He allowed 9 hits and no walks in 8

innings.














 

Johnny Antonelli scattered 11 hits over 8 plus innings as the Giants edge the Braves 3-2.

39,595 fans watched an exciting game at County Stadium. The New York Giants

topped the Milwaukee Braves by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.



Milwaukee was unable to claim the lead after New York went ahead in the top of

the 3rd inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. Milwaukee made it

exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.



Johnny Antonelli(13-13) allowed 2 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the

victory. Hoyt Wilhelm earned the save, his 1st. Bob Buhl(16-8) was tagged

with the loss.



'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Antonelli, 'I got burned

on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'












 

Willard Schmidt went 8 plus strong innings as the Cardinals edged the Dodgers 4-3.

The St. Louis Cardinals edged the Brooklyn Dodgers at Sportsmans Park by the

score of 4 to 3.



Willard Schmidt(8-4) pitched well for St. Louis in their victory. He went 8

and 2/3 innings allowing 8 hits and 2 walks. Brooklyn threatened in the 9th

but their rally came up short.



Barney Schultz was credited with his 4th save. The losing pitcher was Roger

Craig(5-2) in relief. Harry Walker was beaming after the game, 'Not only

were we making good contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'!

I just love winning these tight ones! It was just our evening - no doubt

about it!'

NL transactions September 13th

The Chicago Cubs recalled 26 year old rookie outfielder Gale Wade. Wade hit .250 with 1 RBI in 14 plate appearances before being sent down May 3rd.
