WEB GEMS- Top 4th: Ray Jablonski robbed Jackie Robinson of an extra base hit.

Joe Nuxhall tossed a complete game at Crosley Field as the Cincinnati Redlegs
beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 5 to 4.

Cincinnati won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 3
runs on 2 hits. Ray Jablonski opened up the inning nicely when he banged out
a single. Ted Kluszewski next to the plate and he drew a walk. Wally Post
then drew a walk to load the bases. Gus Bell was next to the plate, but was
promptly struck out. Smoky Burgess stepped into the box and doubled with all
three runners coming home. Brooklyn threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.

The win went to Nuxhall(6-4) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Jim Hughes(1-4)
took the loss in relief. 'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said
Walt Alston after the game. 'We lost this game tonight because we didn't
follow the instructions every Little Leaguer hears every day.'

NL Transaction June 16th

The Brooklyn Dodgers placed starting pitcher Billy Loes on the DL. The 25 year old Loes, in his 5th season with the Dodgers, was 5-3 with a 3.37 ERA in 11 starts so far this year. Last year he finished 12-6 with a 4.65 ERA in 21 starts. Dodger skipper, Walter Alston said that Clem Labine would take Loes spot in the rotation until his return.

Carl Erskine tossed a complete game and first baseman Gil Hodges had 2 base
hits as the Brooklyn Dodgers topped the Cincinnati Redlegs by a score of 8 to
1 at Crosley Field.

Cincinnati was unable to recover after Brooklyn went ahead in the 4th inning
scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Duke Snider started the inning off
right when he drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Sandy Amoros stepped
in and he tripled resulting in a run. Hodges then doubled scoring the final
run of the inning. Brooklyn totaled 9 on the night.

The victory was credited to Erskine(6-5) who went the distance, allowing 1
run. Rudy Minarcin(2-3) was charged with the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 4
hits in 5 innings.

The Pittsburgh Pirates send down 32 year old pitcher Ben Wade. To replace him the Pirates called up 32 year old Cuban rookie pitcher Lino Donoso.

Wade, in his 5th major league season, was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA over 28 innings pitched. Last year he pitched for both the Dodgers and the Cardinals.

Donoso, from Havana Cuba, will be making his major league debut in a start against the Redlegs June 18th.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed starting shortstop Alex Grammas on the DL. Grammas, the 29 year old 2nd year player, was hitting .265 with one homer and 15 RBI. Last year he hit .262 with 2 homers and 40 RBI.

NL Transaction June 15th

The St. Louis Cardinals sent 28 year old rookie pitcher Barney Schultz and Herb Moford, a 26 year old rookie pitcher, to Triple A. They recalled 26 year old rookie pitcher Floyd Wooldridge and 27 year old 2nd year pitcher Mel Wright. This move was made to improve what has been a terrible bullpen for the Cardinals.

Schultz was 0-2 with 2 saves and a 5.72 ERA in 28 innings of relief.

Moford was 0-2 with a 5.85 ERA in 20 innings, including one start.

Wooldridge, who was sent down May 11th, is 1-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings, including one start.

Wright will be appearing for the first time this year after a very shaky 1954. He was 0-1 with a 21.60 ERA in 10 innings pitched last year.

In a good matchup it was the Washington Nationals 5, the Cleveland Indians 3
at Griffith Stadium.

Washington had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning when
they had 4 base hits. Johnny Groth led off and keyed the rally when he
stroked a one-base hit. Clint Courtney next to the plate and he doubled.
Roy Sievers then doubled knocking in a run. Bobby Kline stepped in and he
was hit by a pitch. Dean Stone stepped into the box and laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Eddie Yost contributed to the rally and drew a walk to load
the bases. Ernie Oravetz came next and he delivered a single, and an error
was also committed, which accounted for two additional runs. Cleveland
threatened in the 9th but Washington was able to put down the rally.

Stone(4-5) got the win allowing 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Johnny Schmitz
gained credit for his 1st save. Bob Feller(3-2) was tagged with the loss.
He was knocked around by Washington, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 3 and
1/3 innings.

'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully
grim,' noted Chuck Dressen. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together
and turn things around!'

by a score of 6 to 2 at Memorial Stadium.

Palica(2-8) put on a good performance. He allowed just 7 hits and 4 walks in
9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.15. Baltimore had a total of 12 hits for the

Bob Keegan(2-5) was the loser. He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
Paul Richards was asked about the performance of Palica, 'He had his good
stuff out there this afternoon. The fans really get into it when the
strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more
adrenalin.'

AL Transaction June 15th

The Baltimore Orioles traded Gene Woodling and Billy Cox to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for Dave Pope and Wally Westlake; Billy Cox refused to report to the Cleveland Indians and the Baltimore Orioles sent $15000 (June 15, 1955) to complete trade.

Woodling, the 32 year outfielder in his 10th year, will be returning to the team he started his career with. Last year Woodling hit .221 with 2 homers and 37 RBI with the Yankees. This year he had been the Orioles best hitter posting a .279 batting average with 6 homers and 24 RBI. Indians manager Al Lopez said he will platoon with Ralph Kiner.

The 34 year old Westlake is in his 9th season. This was his 3rd with Cleveland. Last year he hit .272 with 10 homers and 33 RBI. This year in limited playing time he was at .095 in 23 plate appearances with one RBI. Baltimore manager Paul Richards said he will be mainly used as a pinch hitter.

Pope, 2 days away from his 34th birthday, was in his 3rd season in the majors, all with Cleveland. He was getting his 1st shot at real playing time this season after hitting .309 with 6 homers and 15 RBI in 114 plate appearances last year. This year he is at .240 with 4 homers and 18 RBI. Richards said Pope would be one of his everyday outfielders.

Cox, after refusing the trade, was released by the Orioles. Although his defense had been very good at the hot corner, Cox was only hitting .218 with 3 homers and 18 RBI. Last year with the Dodgers he hit .193 with 3 homers and 23 RBI as their utility infielder. In his 11th season, the 35 year old Cox said he intends to retire.
