The Kansas City Athletics were finally were able to get back on the winner's
track and toppled the Baltimore Orioles by a 7 to 3 score at Memorial
Stadium.

Kansas City took the lead for good in the 4th inning scoring 3 runners on 4
hits. Kansas City had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Arnie Portocarrero(3-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 2/3 innings
and allowing 3 runs. Johnny Sain gained credit for his 2nd save. Saul
Rogovin(2-5) was given the loss. Kansas City scored big getting 6 runs off
him in 4 and 1/3 innings.







 

Billy Hoeft upped his win streak to 7 straight tossing a 4 hitter as Detroit bested Washington 6-2.

Billy Hoeft delivered 9 solid innings at Griffith Stadium where the Detroit
Tigers beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 6 to 2.

Detroit set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 3 runs utilizing
5 base hits. Harvey Kuenn led off and he doubled. Bill Tuttle came next and
he hit a single scoring a run. After an out was recorded, Earl Torgeson
stepped up to the plate and he doubled driving in one more runner. After
another out, Jim Delsing came up and he laced a base-hit scoring the final
run of the inning. That early scoring was all that Hoeft(8-5) needed.
Detroit managed 11 in their victory.

Bob Porterfield(4-7) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits
and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. 'He came out with good stuff,' Bucky
Harris said about Hoeft. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.'






 

Bob Cerv's pinch two run single in the 9th rallied the Yankees to a 4-3 win over the Tribe.

With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs,
New York Yankees rallied to top Cleveland Indians by the score of 4 to
3.

New York came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 3 runs
utilizing 3 base hits. Yogi Berra opened up the inning nicely when he
smacked a single. Two outs later Andy Carey came up and he tripled plating a
run. Phil Rizzuto then drew a walk. Charlie Silvera followed and he drew a
walk to load the bases. Bob Cerv stepped into the box and laced a base-knock
making New York victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd.
Although they lost, Cleveland did out-hit New York 12 to 7.

The victory went to Bob Wiesler(4-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. The
losing pitcher was Don Mossi(4-4) in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2
hits in 1/3 of an inning.

Casey Stengel was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought
game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see
the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win tonight!'






 

Billy Pierce struck out 10 and held the Red Sox to no earned runs as the White Sox win 4-2.

Billy Pierce whiffed 10 batters as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Boston
Red Sox by a score of 4 to 2 at Fenway Park.

Pierce(7-3) gave Chicago a solid outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 9 hits and no walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 2.01 to 1.80.
Chicago banged out 10 on the night.

Mel Parnell(3-1) was hit with the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 7 hits in 6
innings. Pierce was humble when questioned about his performance, 'Well, I
felt pretty confident in my pitches tonight. But, I had great support behind
me and I just threw what was called. That was an extremely well called
game!'
