Joe Nuxhall went 10 strong innings as the Cincinnati Redlegs outscored the St.

Louis Cardinals in 11 innings 5 to 3.



The score was tied at 3 after nine. Cincinnati came out the victor in the 11th

inning. After two outs Johnny Temple keyed the rally when he slapped a

one-base hit. Smoky Burgess was next and he cleared the fences for a two-run

home run (his 21st of the season) making Cincinnati the victors to the

delight of the home town faithful. For the game Cincinnati out-hit St. Louis

12 to 8.



The win went to Jackie Collum(6-6) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Willard

Schmidt(5-2) was given the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk

in 2 and 2/3 innings.












 

Vern Law pitched a 6 hitter as the Pirates hand the Giants their 7th straight loss 4-2.

first baseman Preston Ward had 2 base hits at Forbes Field where the

Randy Jackson hit one over the fence as the Chicago Cubs staged a dramatic

comeback over the Milwaukee Braves by a score of 6 to 3 at County

Stadium.



Chicago won the game with a rally in the 9th inning as they scored 4 runs on 5

base hits. Chicago finished with 13 hits while Milwaukee ended up with 9.



The winning pitcher was Bill Tremel(2-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.

Howie Pollet gained credit for his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Lew

Burdette(12-8). He served up 4 homeruns in his 8 innings.



After the game, it took a long while before Charlie Grimm emerged from his

office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He

concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as

I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more

light-hearted over in the Chicago locker room.'












 

Del Ennis hit a walk off single in the 14th giving him 3 hits and 5 RBI in the Phillies 5-4 win over the Dodgers.

Robin Roberts pitched a complete game as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated

the Brooklyn Dodgers in 14 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Connie Mack

Stadium.



The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Philadelphia won it in the

14th inning. Saul Rogovin reached on an error. Glen Gorbous came next and

he doubled. Bobby Morgan then drew a walk to load the bases. Granny Hamner

was the next batter, but he struck out. Del Ennis came to the plate and

slapped a single making Philadelphia the winners and sending the 19,737 fans

home happy. Philadelphia totaled 13 on the night.



The victory was credited to Roberts(13-14) who went the distance, allowing 4

runs. Don Bessent(5-2) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits

and 1 walk in 1/3 of an inning.

NL Transaction August 19th


The St. Louis Cardinals signed Lindy McDaniel as an amateur free agent (bonus baby). The 19 year old righthander from Hollis, Oklahoma will be immediately placed on the big league roster.
