Bob Grim completed the game without help from the bullpen at Municipal Stadium
where the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Athletics by the score of 8
to 1.

New York jumped on top to stay in the top of the 2nd inning when they scored 2
runs on 1 hit. That early scoring was all that Grim(5-1) needed. New York
finished with 9 hits in the victory.

Art Ceccarelli(2-4) was the loser. It was another victory for New York at
Municipal Stadium. Now their winning streak stands at 6 games. 'I'm glad to
get the win', Grim said. 'We've got some good momentum going now.'

Red Sox first sacker hospitalized after 6-2 win over White Sox

Harry Agganis was hospitalized with pneumonia after complaining of severe fever and chest pains. Though he rejoined the Red Sox ten days later, he fell ill again in Kansas City on June 27 and was flown back to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he died of a pulmonary embolism at age of 26. Ten thousand mourners attended his wake.

Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, Agganis was a star football player at Boston University, primarily at quarterback. Coach Paul Brown of the Cleveland Browns thought he could be the successor to Otto Graham and drafted the college junior in the first round of the 1952 NFL draft, offering him a bonus of $25,000. Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey outdid Brown, however, and signed Agganis to play Major League Baseball for the Red Sox as a first baseman for $35,000.

Following his 1953 college graduation, Agganis played with the Triple-A Louisville where he hit .281 with 23 home runs and 108 RBI. He made his major league debut on April 13, 1954. Agganis had a modest rookie campaign hitting .251 in 122 games with 10 homers and 51 RBI, though he did lead American League first basemen in assists and fielding percentage.

At the time of his hospitalization Harry was hitting .287 with 18 RBI.

Rookie Herb Score tosses a two hit shutout as the Tribe beats the Orioles 4-0.

Score, the AL pitcher of the month for May, struck out 11 and gave up only 2 hits and 2 walks in recording his 5th shutout. The southpaw didn't give up a hit until 2 were out in the 8th when Jim Pyburn singled up the middle. He also ran his record to 8-0 with a miniscule 0.96 ERA.

Herb Score took a no-hitter into the 8th inning at Municipal Stadium as the
Cleveland Indians beat the struggling Baltimore Orioles by the count of 4 to
0.

Score(8-0) simply dominated Baltimore. He surrendered only 2 hits and 2 walks
in 9 innings. Score recorded 11 strikeouts. The left-handed Score lost his
chance for a no-hitter when Jim Pyburn singled with two outs in the 8th
inning. Cleveland managed 8 in their victory.

Saul Rogovin(2-3) was the loser. He surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits in 7 and
2/3 innings. Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Score - except
Baltimore. Paul Richards lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon. He was
keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout
pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were
the visitors!'
