Billy Hoeft allowed Bucky Harris to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
and right fielder Al Kaline had 4 hits and 6 RBI at Briggs Stadium where the
Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 12 to 4.

Kaline was really 'in the zone'. He doubled plating two runs in the 2nd
inning, lined a one-base hit in the 4th inning, slapped a single bringing in
two baserunners in the 5th inning and cracked a solo homerun (his 13th of the
season) in the 7th inning. Detroit managed 13 in their victory.

Hoeft(6-5) allowed 4 runs on the game. Tom Brewer(6-4) absorbed the loss.
'It's just about getting in a good hitting position and just going out there
and being prepared,' Kaline said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and
not do too much. I just try to have a good approach, day after day, game by
game, and pitch by pitch.'

Gus Triandos sac fly capped a 3 run 9th as the Orioles beat the Athletics 3-2 and upped their win streak to 6 games.

WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Hal Smith blocked the plate, saving a run!

In a thriller the Baltimore Orioles staged a dramatic comeback then held on to
win over the Kansas City Athletics by a score of 3 to 2 at Municipal
Stadium.

Baltimore won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 3
runs on 3 hits. Billy Cox kicked off the action when he tripled. After an
out was recorded, Hoot Evers came up and he drew a walk. Gil Coan then hit a
single plating a run. Hal Smith followed and he ripped a base-knock scoring
one more run. Gus Triandos came to the plate and hit a deep fly scoring the
final run of the inning. Ray Moore(4-6) got help from Harry Dorish who
pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 3rd save.

The loss was charged to Vic Raschi(2-2). 'I pin this one on my own
shoulders,' Raschi said. 'The bottom line is I didn't get the job done. Our
fans deserve better than this.'

the Chicago Cubs by the score of 4 to 3.

Brooklyn went ahead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits. Jackie Robinson lined a single. Walt Alston then called
for a steal which was successful. Carl Furillo then would ground out scoring
the run. Chicago proved to be no trouble in the 9th.

The victory was credited to Carl Erskine(5-5) who went 8 innings, allowing 3
runs. Clem Labine gained credit for his 3rd save. Sam Jones(4-7) took the
loss. His biggest problem was control as he allowed 9 walks in 6 innings.

NL Transaction June 10th

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed pitcher Bob Purkey on the disabled list and called up 24 year old twins Eddie and Johnny O'Brien.

Purkey was the Pirates most consistent starter this year with a 3-3 record and a 4.12 ERA. He started 10 games, completing three, tossing 68 innings. Last year he was 3-4 with a 3.63 ERA over 131 innings pitched.

Both Eddie and Johnny O'Brien had their rookie years in 1953 but spent last year at the Triple A level. Johnnie looks to play at 2B where the Pirates have struggled and Eddie will play both OF and IF according to Fred Haney, the Pirate skipper.

NL Transaction June 9th

The Cincinnati Reds traded Bob Borkowski and cash to Brooklyn Dodgers in exchange for
Joe Black.

The 29 year old Borkowski was in his 4th year with the Redlegs after two years with the Cubs. last year he hit .258 with 12 RBI in 77 games. This year he was not getting the playing time and was hitting .167 with 1 RBI in 19 plate appearances. He will be a pinch hitter and defensive replacement for the Dodgers according to Manager Walter Alston.

Black, a 31 year old relief pitcher, was in his 4th year with the Dodgers. After a terrific rookie year in 1952 he has struggled with arm injuries the last two seasons. Last year he only pitched 6 innings and was 0-0 with a 7.94 ERA. This season Black was 2-0 with a 4.70 ERA in 15 innings pitched. Redlegs Manager Birdie Tebbets will immediatley put him in the bullpen for much needed help.
