AL Transaction July 17th


The Kansas City Athletics called up 32 year old righthander Marion Fricano. Fricano is in his 4th big league season all with the Athletics. Last year he was 7-13 with a 5.33 ERA in 152 innings. This year he was sent down on May 11th after pitching 12 innings with no record and a 4.38 ERA.

 

AL Transaction July 17th


The Chicago White Sox claimed Gil Coan from the Baltimore Orioles on waivers. Coan, a 33 year outfielder, is in his 10th major league season. After 8 seasons with Washington, Coan hit .240 with one homer and 22 RBI in his 1st year with Baltimore last season. This season he is hitting .235 with one homer and 15 RBI in 143 plate appearances.

George Kell hit a walk off home run as the Chicago White Sox defeated theBaltimore Orioles in 10 innings by the score of 3 to 2 at Comiskey Park. The score was tied at 2 after nine. Chicago won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. After two outs Kell delivered a solo blast (his 3rd of the season) giving Chicago the victory as 33,773 happy fans celebrated wildly. Chicago had 9 hits for the afternoon. The win was credited to Sandy Consuegra(5-2) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Hal Brown(0-1) was the loser in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 2/3 of an inning. Chicago continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 6 games and counting. 'We've really come alive lately,' Marty Marion said. 'We won some tough games and I feel real good about this ballclub right now, and hopefully we'll continue the roll we're on.'

Al Rosen followed up a Larry Doby homer with one of his own providing the final margin as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Boston Red Sox 3 to 2 at Municipal Stadium. Art Houtteman(2-5) earned his pay with a solid performance for Cleveland. He surrendered 7 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. The Boston batters went down meekly in the 9th. Frank Sullivan(9-7) was the loser. He gave up 3 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings.

Mickey Mantle slammed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Johnny Kucks allowed CaseyStengel to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the impressive New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 5 to 2. Mantle had a big day at the plate. He cleared the fences for a two-run homerun in the 6th inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 27th of the season) in the 8th inning. Detroit proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. The winning pitcher was Kucks(7-3) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Ned Garver(9-5) took the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 7 and 1/3innings of work.

Right fielder Al Kaline rocketed 2 homeruns, including a walkoff 3 run shot, and had 7 RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated the New York Yankees in 11 innings by a score of 14 to 12 at Briggs Stadium. The score was tied at 11 after nine. Detroit ended up winning it in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Charlie Maxwell keyed the rally when he banged out a single. Harvey Kuenn next to the plate and he drew a walk. Bill Tuttle got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Kaline came up and he lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 22nd of the season) giving Detroit the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 6 times. Frank Lary(6-11) went 1 inning allowing 1 run for the victory. BobTurley(10-4) absorbed the loss in relief. He was knocked around, surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Dean Stone was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Municipal Stadium as the Washington Nationals beat the Kansas City Athletics 8 to 2. Stone(8-6) gave a fine effort for Washington. He allowed 9 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.27 to 4.06. Washington totaled 12 on the night. Alex Kellner(4-8) took the loss. The Washington ballclub's record now stands at 34-51. With the loss, Kansas City has a record of 4-6 lately, 29-57overall.

AL Transaction July 16th


The Chicago White Sox placed 34 year old righthander Bob Keegan on the disabled list today. Keegan, who was (10-10) with a 3.65 ERA last season in 27 starts, has struggled immensly this year. With a (3-5) record and 7.17 ERA the Sox could not afford to wait for Keegan to pitch through his sore arm anymore. He has only tossed 38 innings so far this year in 11 games, 6 of those starts.

 

AL Transaction July 16th


The Cleveland Indians sold Jim Dyck to the Baltimore Orioles. Dyck, a 33 year old outfielder/third baseman, was o for 1 with a walk in his only two games for the 1954 Tribe. This will be his 5th big league season and he will be back with his original organization. He spent his 1st 3 seasons with the St Louis Browns before his trade to Cleveland.

Robin Roberts had a strong outing at Connie Mack Stadium where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs in 13 innings 5 to 3. The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Philadelphia came out on top in the 13th inning. After an out was recorded, Willie Jones opened up the rally as he banged out a single. Andy Seminick got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Stan Lopata then popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 23rd of the season) giving Philadelphia the victory and sending the 22,241 home-town fans home happy. Philadelphia finished with 12 hits while Chicago ended up with 6. The victory went to Jack Meyer(7-7) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. The losing pitcher was Harry Perkowski(0-5) in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 hits and no walks.

Art Fowler carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning at Ebbets Field as the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 8 to1. Fowler(9-2) was simply too much for the Brooklyn batters. He allowed only 1 hit and 3 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 2.81 to 2.55. The right-handed Fowler lost his chance for a no-hitter when Frank Kellert singled with nobody out in the 8th inning. Cincinnati had a total of 11 hits for the game. Billy Loes(6-4) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 3 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Hank Aaron blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves man-handled the New York Giants - the final score was 14 to 2. Aaron provided much of the offense. He ripped a solo home run in the 2nd inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 21st of the season) in the 5th inning and lined a single in the 7th inning. Milwaukee bats were hot in the 1st inning with 6 runs on 8 hits. Milwaukee had 21 hits overall, while New York had 9. Warren Spahn(11-5) went 5 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Roberto Vargas earned his 2nd save. Sal Maglie(6-5) was given the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 7 hits in 2/3 of an inning.

Pittsburgh Pirates broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 6 to 5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals and sending their hometown fans home smiling. Pittsburgh scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Johnny O'Brien drew a walk. Dale Long stepped up next and he drew a walk. Dick Groat then ripped a base-knock to load the bases. Bob Friend followed and he stroked a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. St.Louis was out-hit by Pittsburgh, 14 hits to 9. Friend(6-7) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Paul Lapalme(2-1)absorbed the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered 2 hits and 2 walks.
