Al Smith went yard and Herb Score whitewashed Chicago on 2 hits at Municipal
Stadium where the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox by the score
of 4 to 0.

Score(11-2) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 2 hits
and 4 walks in 9 innings. Cleveland had just 5 hits for the night.

Jack Harshman(5-5) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 5 innings and
surrendered 3 hits and 3 walks.






 

George Susce threw a 5 hit shutout as the Red Sox pound the Orioles 9-0.

Catcher Sammy White hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI and George Susce hurled a fine
complete game shutout as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9
to 0 at Memorial Stadium.

Susce(2-3) was tremendous on the mound for Boston. He allowed only 5 hits and
2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.82 to 3.09. Boston finished
with 13 hits in the victory.

Don Johnson(1-5) was the losing pitcher. He was unable to control the Boston
offense and allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.







 

AL Transaction July 2nd

The Baltimore Orioles claimed Dave Philley from Cleveland Indians on waivers. Philley, the 35 year old outfielder, is in his 11th ML season. Last year he hit .213 with 15 homers and 73 RBI as the starting RF for the World Champion Indians. This season he had lost his starting job and was hitting .298 with 1 HR and 15 RBI in 116 plate appearances.






The Orioles released 1B Eddie Waitkus to make room for Philley. Waitkus, also 35, is in his 11th season. Last year he hit .299 with 2 HR and 21 RBI as a platoon regular with the Orioles. This year he was hitting .326 with no HR and 5 RBI in 96 plate appearances.

In a dramatic ending, the dominant New York Yankees staged a comeback win over
the Washington Nationals by the count of 7 to 5.

New York scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3
runs using 4 hits. Joe Collins led off and started the rally when he laced a
base-hit. Pedro Ramos then picked Rizzuto off first base. Gil McDougald
then delivered a single. Andy Carey followed and he lined a one-base hit.
Mickey Mantle came to the plate and rifled a three-run blast (his 23rd of the
season) making New York the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.
New York had a total of 12 hits for the game.

The win was credited to Tom Sturdivant(1-2) who went 2 innings allowing no
runs. The loss was charged to Ramos(0-4) in relief.

Casey Stengel was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought
game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see
the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this
afternoon!'






 

Ray Boone homers twice driving in 5 runs as the Tigers outscore the Athletics 7-3 ending their 5 game losing streak.

Ray Boone cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Ned Garver went the distance at
Municipal Stadium as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Athletics 7 to
3.

Boone was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided
much of the offense for the visitors. He lost the ball over the fence for
three runs in the 1st inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his
7th of the season) in the 9th inning. Detroit banged out 11 on the
afternoon.

The victory was credited to Garver(7-4) who went the distance, allowing 3
runs. Ray Herbert(2-6) was given the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 9 hits in 7
and 1/3 innings.

In an great finish the Kansas City Athletics won in dramatic fashion over the
Detroit Tigers by a score of 5 to 3 at Municipal Stadium.

Kansas City came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
when they scored 5 runs on 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Gus

Billy Pierce tossed a complete game as the blistering-hot Chicago White Sox
defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 3 to 2 at Municipal
Stadium.

Chicago tallied 1 run in the top of the 7th inning. Cleveland was retired
without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.

Pierce(8-3) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Early Wynn(6-3)
absorbed the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 4 hits in 9 innings.

Chicago continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 9 games and
counting.

Tom Brewer pitched a complete game at Memorial Stadium where the Boston Red
Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 8 to 1.

Gene Stephens enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He tripled in the 1st
inning, doubled in the 3rd inning and tripled clearing the bases in the 4th
inning. Boston totaled 11 on the night.

Brewer(8-6) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. The loss was
charged to Jim Wilson(5-7). Boston scored big getting 7 runs off him in 3
and 2/3 innings.

Boston now has a record of 36-39. Paul Richards was pretty down after the
loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the
last week or two. That won't get it done.'






 

AL Transaction July 1st


The Baltimore Orioles released 10 year veteran pitcher Joe Coleman. The 32 year old Coleman was placed on the DL May 10th after starting the season 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA. Last year he was 10-15 with a 3.09 ERA over 32 starts for the Orioles.















Fred Marsh was activated from the DL to take Colemans roster spot. Marsh was aquired in the off season from the White Sox. The 30 year old secondbaseman was hitting .333 in 24 AB's before going on the DL June 1st. Last season he hit .361 in 108 plate appearances with Chicago.

Bob Rush allowed Stan Hack to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game and
Gene Baker had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs
beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8 to 4.

Chicago scored 5 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 5 hits. The big
moment was provided by Randy Jackson who made the Chicago fans a happy lot
when he lined a base-hit bringing in two baserunners. Chicago won despite
being out-hit by St. Louis 13 hits to 10.

Johnny Podres pitched a complete game and right fielder Carl Furillo went deep
and had 2 RBI at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers staged a comeback win
over the woeful Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 4 to 3.

Brooklyn came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Jackie Robinson led off and started
the rally when he tripled. Gil Hodges followed and he banged out a single
scoring a run. Furillo then lined a one-base hit. After an out was
recorded, Don Zimmer stepped in and he was walked intentionally to load the
bases. George Shuba stepped into the box and was hit by a pitch making
Brooklyn victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Both teams
totaled 7 on the night.

Podres(8-2) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Vern Law(5-7)
absorbed the loss. Walt Alston was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to
win a hard fought game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied.
And did you see the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable
win tonight!'






 

Hank Thompson had 3 hits and 3 RBI, including his 16th homer, as the Giants outscore the Phillies 8-5.

York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 8 to 5.

Johnny Antonelli(7-6) had a steady outing. He went 6 and 1/3 innings
surrendering 8 hits and 2 walks. New York and Philadelphia each finished the
night with 11 hits.

Marv Grissom earned the save, his 7th. Robin Roberts(8-9) was the losing
pitcher. He allowed 7 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 2/3 innings.
