In a thriller the Philadelphia Phillies staged a dramatic comeback over the
Milwaukee Braves winning by a score of 5 to 4 at Connie Mack
Stadium.
Philadelphia came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs on 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Jim Greengrass opened
up the rally as he drew a walk. Stan Lopata came next and he lined a
one-base hit. Marv Blaylock then stroked a base-hit knocking in a run.
Richie Ashburn followed and he reached on an error. After another out, Bobby
Morgan stepped in and he banged out a single making Philadelphia the victors
to the delight of the home town faithful. Philadelphia finished with 10 hits
while Milwaukee ended up with 7.
Bob Miller(5-3) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Lew
Burdette(12-9) was given the loss. 'What a game!,' Miller said afterward.
'When we won it I almost couldn't believe it!'
Bob Thurman's pinch single gave Cincinnati the lead as the Redlegs score 4 in the 9th for a 5-2 win over the Pirates.

In a thriller the Cincinnati Redlegs staged a dramatic comeback then held on
to win over the pathetic Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 2 at Forbes
Field.
Cincinnati erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning as they scored
4 runs on 5 base hits. Cincinnati had 10 hits for the night.
Art Fowler(14-4) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory.
Jackie Collum gained credit for his 1st save. Vern Law(10-13) was the loser.
He gave up 9 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.
Birdie Tebbetts was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and
win it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see
the fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of
unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win tonight!'
Roy Campanella had 3 hits, 2 homers, and 3 RBI as the Dodgers dumped the Cubs 6-2.

Catcher Roy Campanella cracked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Ebbets Field as the
Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs by the count of 6 to 2.
Campanella had a big evening at the plate. He ripped a solo home run in the
2nd inning, laced a one-base hit in the 3rd inning and smashed a two-run
homer (his 32nd of the season) in the 8th inning. Brooklyn banged out 8 on
the night.
The victory went to Don Newcombe(12-9) who went 7 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2
runs. Don Bessent was credited with his 2nd save. Bob Rush(12-10) was the
losing pitcher. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 4 runs in 2 and
1/3 innings.

Frank Lary was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game at Briggs Stadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 3
to 2.
Detroit came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Al Kaline led
off and started the attack as he hit a single. One out later, Ray Boone was
the next batter, but he struck out. Charlie Maxwell then smashed a two-run
homer (his 5th of the season). Detroit and New York each finished the night
with 5 hits.
