Luis Arroyo went the distance and Bill Sarni had 3 base hits as the St. Louis

Cardinals topped the New York Giants by a score of 4 to 2 at Polo

Grounds.

St. Louis had 2 runs cross the plate in the 7th inning when they had 4 base

hits. Red Schoendienst led off and he drew a walk. Sal Maglie then picked

Schoendienst off first base. After an out was recorded, Ken Boyer came to

the plate and stroked a single. Sarni came up and he laced a one-base hit.

Arroyo stepped into the box and lined a single driving in a run. Bob

Stephenson kept the rally going and laced a base-hit scoring the final run of

the inning. The New York batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th.

The victory was credited to Arroyo(6-6) who went the distance, allowing 2

runs. Maglie(6-6) was given the loss. 'I had a little blister on my index

finger before the game, but I thought it was nothing.' Arroyo said. 'I was

lucky I got a win because I couldn't put the ball where I wanted it.'

the season). After an out was recorded, Willie Jones came up and he ripped a

solo home run (his 15th of the season) giving Philadelphia the victory as

8,753 happy fans celebrated wildly. Philadelphia totaled 7 on the night.

fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win tonight!'

In a good matchup it was the impressive Brooklyn Dodgers 8, the Chicago Cubs 6

at Ebbets Field.

Brooklyn brought 6 runs across the plate in the 4th inning when they had 5

base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Duke Snider who brought the

crowd to their feet when he doubled which was good for two runs. Brooklyn

had 11 hits for the game and Chicago had 8.
Jimmy King, of the Cubs hit a homer for the 3rd consecutive game and 5th in seven games.

Don Bessent(2-0) got the win allowing 5 runs in 7 innings. Ed Roebuck was

credited with his 6th save. Jim Davis(4-2) was the losing pitcher. He

allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

NL Transaction July 21st

The New York Giants have placed starting catcher Wes Westrum on the DL. It looks as if the 32 year old nine season veteran is out for the rest of the year. Westrum hit only .165 with 10 homers and 37 RBI for the NL champs last year but did win the Gold Glove. This year he was at .163 with 4 homers and 17 RBI but his defense has suffered due to numerous injuries. He has spent his entire career with the Giants including two World Series appearances.

NL Transaction July 21st

The Cincinnati Redlegs sent 26 year old righthander Steve Ridzik to the minors today. In his 5th season, Ridzik started the year in Philly and was (0-1) 1.64 in 11 innings. Last year with the Phillies he was (3-7) 4.45 in 83 innings. After the April 30th trade to Cincinnati, Ridzik has really struggled going (1-2) 7.42 in 30 innings. Redlegs pilot Birdie Tebbets said "As we are now in the race we really can't afford to give Steve the time to work out his problems up here".

To replace Ridzik on the roster the Redlegs called up 26 year old infielder Milt Smith. Smith will be making his major league debut.
