AL Transaction July 21st


With the injury to Bob Lemon (placed on the DL yesterday), the Cleveland Indians called up 26 year old righthander Jose Santiago. Santiago pitched 2 scoreless innings last year in his major league debut, the only game he has appeared in. Tribe skipper, Al Lopez, plans to use him strictly in relief.

One run was the difference at Municipal Stadium as the Cleveland Indians

defeated the Washington Nationals in 10 innings 3 to 2.



The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Cleveland ended up winning it

in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Jim Hegan drew a walk. One

out later, Bobby Avila came up and he tripled making Cleveland the victor and

beginning a joyous home town celebration. Cleveland had 8 hits for the

night.



The win went to Ray Narleski(6-1) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Chuck

Stobbs(5-7) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 9 and

2/3 innings.












 

Walt Dropo's 3 run homer, Chicago's 1st hit of the game, leads the Pale Hose to a 4-3 victory over the Yankees and sole possession of 1st place.

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Kansas City won it

in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Enos Slaughter stroked a

base-hit. Zernial came to the plate and doubled making Kansas City the

victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Boston was out-hit by

Kansas City, 11 hits to 6.



Cloyd Boyer(5-3) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Ellis

Kinder(2-3) was the loser in relief. He allowed 5 hits and no walks in 2 and

1/3 innings.

Catcher Frank House had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Detroit Tigers smashed the

overmatched Baltimore Orioles, 14 to 3.



The Detroit fans enjoyed the offense provided by House. He smacked a single

which plated a run in the 4th inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 11th

of the season) in the 4th inning, lined a one-base hit in the 6th inning and

lashed a base-hit in the 7th inning. Detroit kept the scorekeepers busy in

the 4th inning with 12 runs on 11 hits. Detroit finished with 22 hits while

Baltimore ended up with 7.



The win was credited to Jim Bunning(1-0) who went 5 innings allowing 2 runs.

The losing pitcher was Ray Moore(5-10). He was knocked around, surrendering

8 runs in 3 innings.

AL Transaction July 20th


The Cleveland Indians placed 34 year old starting pitcher Bob Lemon on the disabled list today. Lemon is in his 12th major league season, all with Cleveland, and is expected to be out until mid August. Last season he was (21-11) with a 3.17 ERA and 17 CG's in 33 starts for the World champs. This year he has struggled a bit with a (9-9) record and 4.43 ERA in 21 starts. In his last start yesterday the Washington Nationals tallied 7 times off him in 1 2/3 innings pitched.

The Detroit Tigers called up 23 year old righthander Jim Bunning from the minors today. Bunning, from Southgate, Kentucky, will make his major league debut today starting against the Baltimore Orioles.

Bob Rush was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at Ebbets Field where the Chicago Cubs beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 2 to 1.

Rush(10-8) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Chicago had a total of 7 hits for the game.

Clem Labine(6-2) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Art Fowler blanked Philadelphia in a very well-pitched complete game at Connie Mack Stadium as the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1 to 0.

Fowler(10-2), was (5-23) last year, gave Cincinnati a solid outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.55 to 2.33. Philadelphia was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.

Saul Rogovin(0-2) was the loser. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 4 walks.

CINCINNATI AT PHILADELPHIA

Johnny Klippstein went the distance at Connie Mack Stadium where the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6 to 1.

Cincinnati wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring a single run. Johnny Temple stroked a base-hit. Roy McMillan was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Temple stole third and scored when the ball ended up in the outfield. Cincinnati totaled 10 on the afternoon.

Klippstein(5-4) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Curt Simmons(2-8) was given the loss. The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 53-37. With the loss Philadelphia now has a record of 40-54.

MILWAUKEE AT PITTSBURGH

Third baseman Eddie Mathews blasted 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves topped the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings by a score of 11 to 9 at Forbes Field.

Matthews tied the game at 9 runs apiece with a 3 run bomb in the 9th. Milwaukee won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Ernie Johnson led off the inning for
Milwaukee when he smacked a single. Del Crandall stepped into the batter's box and he doubled. George Crowe then drew a walk to load the bases. After an out was recorded, Johnny Logan stepped up to the plate and he delivered a single driving in a run. Mathews came to the plate and laced a one-base hit
scoring the final run of the inning. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.

Johnson(3-4) went 3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Ron Kline(4-12) absorbed the loss in relief. He was touched for 8 hits and 3 walks in 3 innings.

'Actually, I didn't feel that comfortable at the plate today' Mathews said after the game. 'Despite that, I'm happy with the results!


ST. LOUIS AT NEW YORK

Tom Poholsky(2-4) and Johnny Antonelli(8-7) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with Poholsky and the St. Louis Cardinals coming out on top of the New York Giants 2 to 1. In the 2nd inning St. Louis went on top for good plating an isolated run on a Stan Musial solo homer. New York went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th. Mel Wright was credited with his 1st save.
