At Crosley Field the St. Louis Cardinals easily handled the Cincinnati Redlegs
by the score of 9 to 5.

St. Louis promptly took the lead in their half of the first as they scored 2
runs on 3 base hits. Both teams totaled 11 on the night.

The win was credited to Luis Arroyo(5-5) who went 7 innings allowing 5 runs.
The losing pitcher was Gerry Staley(5-7). He was knocked around by St.
Louis, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.







 

Rookie Gene Freese singled in the winning run as the Pirates rallied from 6 runs down to down the Giants 7-6.



The Giants winning streak and the Pirates losing streak are both ended at 6 games.

Frank Thomas touched them all and had 2 RBI and Bob Friend delivered 7 solid
innings at Forbes Field where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Giants
in 10 innings 7 to 6.

The score was tied at 6 after nine. Finally, Pittsburgh pulled the game out
in the 10th inning. Preston Ward tripled. Dale Long was next and he was
walked intentionally. Thomas was next to the plate, but was promptly struck
out. Gene Freese stepped in and he stroked a one-base hit giving Pittsburgh
the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Pittsburgh had 11 hits
for the night.

The victory went to Ron Kline(3-10) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Marv
Grissom(0-6) was given the loss in relief. When questioned, Fred Haney
remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt this good - heck, it's been a
while since we had a win period!'






 

Carl Furillo's 2 run bomb provided the margin of victory as Brooklyn downs Philadelphia 5-4.

4.

Karl Spooner(7-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Brooklyn. He was
reached for 4 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. Philadelphia had a chance in
the 9th but they came up short.

Ed Roebuck was credited with his 4th save. Robin Roberts(8-10) suffered the
loss. He pitched 9 innings and surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk.

Right fielder Hank Aaron had 4 hits at County Stadium where the Milwaukee
Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 17 innings by the score of 5 to
4.

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Finally, Milwaukee
pulled the game out in the 17th inning. Joe Adcock delivered a one-base hit,
and an error was also committed. After an out was recorded, Del Crandall
stepped up to the plate and he would hit into a fielders choice resulting in
an exciting win for Milwaukee and a wild post-game celebration by the home
town fans. Milwaukee won despite being out-hit by St. Louis 17 hits to 12.

The win went to Chet Nichols(7-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. The losing
pitcher was Mel Wright(1-3) in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite
not allowing an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.







 

Hank Aaron tripled and homered as the Braves outscore the Cardinals 8-7 in the 1st of two.

Ray Monzant tossed a complete game as the New York Giants outscored the
slumping Pittsburgh Pirates 8 to 3.

Monzant(4-0) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 10 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings reducing his ERA from 3.91 to 3.66. New York finished with 8 hits in
the victory.

Dick Littlefield(1-8) took the loss. With the win, New York continued their
winning ways; their streak now stands at 6 games and counting. Lou Durocher
was clearly happy after the game -- 'Everything is clicking for us right
now.'






 

Dusty Rhodes drew a bases loaded walk in the 9th to give New York a 5-3 win over Pittsburgh in the 1st of a doubleheader.

Gail Harris had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Jim Hearn pitched a complete game as
the New York Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 5 to 3 at
Forbes Field.

New York came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Bill Taylor
started the attack as he banged out a single. Don Mueller was next and he
lined a base-hit. Mueller took second on the throw. Willie Mays then was
walked intentionally to load the bases. Dusty Rhodes was up next and he drew
a walk which scored a run. Hank Thompson came to the plate and hit a deep
fly scoring the final run of the inning. New York had 12 hits for the
afternoon.

Hearn(7-7) got the victory, allowing 3 runs for the game. Bob Friend(4-7)
absorbed the loss. He was touched for 12 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3
innings.

The Chicago Cubs edged the Cincinnati Redlegs at Wrigley Field by the score of
5 to 4.

Chicago scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning. The critical plate appearance was by
Jim King who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he doubled bringing
in two baserunners. Although they lost, Cincinnati did out-hit Chicago 11 to
7.

Warren Hacker(4-7) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory.
Hacker was helped out by Hal Jeffcoat who recorded his 4th save. Rudy
Minarcin(3-4) suffered the loss.

With this win, Chicago has a 38-42 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With
this loss, Cincinnati has a 7-3 record of late, 41-31 overall.






 

Johnny Temple had 3 hits leading the Redlegs to a 5-3 win over the Cubs in the first of two.

Catcher Andy Seminick had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Connie Mack Stadium as the
Philadelphia Phillies won in their last at-bat beating the Brooklyn Dodgers
by the count of 7 to 6.

The game was decided in the 9th inning. Del Ennis stroked a base-hit. Jim
Hughes then was wild with a pitch. Willie Jones then drew a walk. Granny
Hamner followed and he grounded into a double play. Seminick came to the
plate and singled making Philadelphia victorious to the delight of the the
home town crowd. Philadelphia had 12 hits for the game and Brooklyn had 8.

The winning pitcher was Jack Meyer(5-6) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. The losing pitcher was Hughes(2-6) in relief. He allowed 1 run and
3 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Ron Negray completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 8 to 3 at Connie Mack
Stadium.

Philadelphia had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning with
the help of 3 hits. The highlight belonged to Roy Smalley who made the crowd
happy when he belted a three-run homer (his 5th of the season). Philadelphia
finished with 10 hits in the victory.

Negray(2-0), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Don
Newcombe(8-5) took the loss. Philadelphia scored big getting 5 runs off him
in 4 innings.

The win by Philadelphia was very good news as they had been 2-8 of late. Now
their seasonal record improves to 32-44. With the loss Brooklyn now has a
record of 50-26.






 

NL Transaction July 4th


The St Louis Cardinals activated shortstop Alex Grammas from the disabled list. The 29 year old 2nd year player was put on the DL June 14th. He was hitting .265 with 1 homer and 15 RBI in 48 games at the time.
