Glen Gorbous had 4 hits and scored 3 times at Connie Mack Stadium as the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings 6 to 5.

The game was deadlocked at 5 after nine full innings. Finally, Philadelphia
pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Gorbous doubled. Granny Hamner
stepped up next and he delivered a base-hit resulting in an exciting win for
Philadelphia and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.
Philadelphia finished with 9 hits in the victory.

Jack Meyer(4-5) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Ron Kline(2-10) was
given the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 3 hits and
1 walk.

First baseman Gil Hodges jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI as the
Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the New York Giants by a score of 10 to 1 at Ebbets
Field.

Hodges had a good evening at the plate. He rifled a three-run blast (his 17th
of the season) in the 1st inning and doubled in the 5th inning. New York was
out-hit by Brooklyn, 14 hits to 6.

Karl Spooner(5-0) went 5 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Jim Hughes earned
his 4th save. Sal Maglie(4-4) was charged with the loss. He allowed 7 hits
and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Redlegs by a score of 5 to 2
at Sportsmans Park.

Cincinnati was unable to recover after St. Louis went ahead in the 5th inning
when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. St. Louis had 8 hits for the game and
Cincinnati had 5.

Floyd Wooldridge(3-1) went 7 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Joe
Nuxhall(8-5) was hit with the loss. St. Louis now has a record of 30-37.
Cincinnati will hope that this loss is only a 'blip' on their recent 8-2 run
- and not a start of a new trend.

Warren Spahn pitched a complete game as the Milwaukee Braves outscored the
Chicago Cubs in 11 innings 4 to 3.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. Milwaukee ended up winning it in the 11th
inning. After an out was recorded, Bill Bruton delivered a one-base hit.
One out later, Eddie Mathews stepped in and he doubled resulting in an
exciting win for Milwaukee and a wild post-game celebration by the home town
fans. Milwaukee finished with just 6 hits in the victory.

The victory was credited to Spahn(9-5) who went the distance, allowing 3 runs.
Hal Jeffcoat(3-6) was tagged with the loss in relief.
