Willie Mays rocketed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the New York Giants won in
dramatic fashion over the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 8 to 6 at Polo
Grounds.

New York erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
when they tallied 6 runs on 5 hits. The key at-bat was by Mays who made the
home-town crowd a happy bunch when he belted a three-run homer (his 27th of
the season). New York finished with 13 hits while Philadelphia ended up with
6.

Hoyt Wilhelm(4-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Jack
Meyer(5-7) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk without
retiring a batter.

'Now that is what I call fun! I just love baseball, especially games like
this, of course,' Lou Durocher offered. 'Everyone at the stadium had a great
time - did you see the fans go wild there at the end?!'

Little used Jack Dittmer slugged two home runs as the Braves outscore the Cubs 8-6.

Jack Dittmer smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Gene Conley pitched a
complete game at Wrigley Field where the Milwaukee Braves beat the Chicago
Cubs by the score of 8 to 6.

Dittmer led the offense for Milwaukee. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 2nd
inning and smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th
inning. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

The victory went to Conley(9-5) who went the distance allowing 6 runs. Bob
Rush(8-8) took the loss. Milwaukee now has a record of 49-28. With this
loss, Chicago has a 5-5 record of late, 38-43 overall.

Sandy Koufax had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and he went the distance as the
Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 1 at Forbes Field.

In the top of the 2nd inning Brooklyn scored 3 runs. Don Zimmer led off and
keyed the rally when he reached on an error. Jim Gilliam stepped into the
batter's box and he banged out a single, and an error was also committed.
Rube Walker then drew a walk to load the bases. Koufax was up next and he
delivered a base-hit driving home two runs. Don Hoak was a strikeout victim,
unable to help out. Pee Wee Reese added to the outburst and drew a walk to
load the bases. Duke Snider was next and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the
final run of the inning. That was all the runs Koufax(2-0) needed. Brooklyn
managed 10 in their victory.

The loss was charged to Vern Law(5-9). He pitched 8 innings allowing 9 hits
and 6 walks.

Rookie Dale Long was 3 for 5 with 4 RBI as the lowly Pirates trounce the Dodgers 13-2 in the 1st of a twinbill.

Roy Face pitched a complete game at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates
embarrassed the Brooklyn Dodgers by the lopsided score of 13 to
2.

Pittsburgh took the lead off Carl Erskine in the first inning when they scored
4 runs on 4 hits. That early scoring was all that Face(4-3) needed.
Pittsburgh totaled 17 on the afternoon.

Erskine(8-7) suffered the loss. He gave up 8 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of
work.

NL Transaction July 6th

The Pittsburgh Pirates sent 27 year old pitcher Nellie King to Triple A. King, in his 2nd season with the Bucs, was (1-3) with a 4.47 ERA in 54 innings, including 4 starts. Last season he was (1-0) with a 12.86 ERA over 7 innings pitched. Pirates Manager Fred Haney is looking for more consistency from King.

NL Transaction July 6th

The Milwaukee Braves sent relief pitcher Joey Jay to triple A and called up pitcher Phil Paine. The 19 year old Jay was (0-1) with a 5.21 ERA in 19 innings, including one start. Last year in a cup of coffee with the big club Joey was (0-1) in 18 IP including one start. Skipper Charlie Grimm really likes the kid but thinks he need more work right now.

The 25 year old righthander Paine was also with the club a brief time last year. He posted a (1-0) record with a 3.95 ERA over 14 innings, all in relief.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed 2B Granny Hammer on the DL today. At 28 Hammner has spent all or part of 11 seasons with the Phillies. Granny has been struggling with injuries all year leading to his .225 avg with one homer and 15 RBI over 64 games. Last year he hit .273 with 15 homers and 73 RBI in 153 games. It looks as if Hamner will be out for a month.
