AL Transaction August 17th
The Chicago White Sox sent 23 year old righthander Mike Fornieles down to triple A today. Fornieles in his 4th season, all with Chicago, was born in Cuba. This season he is (5-3) with a 4.05 ERA in 80 innings, including 9 starts. Last season he was (6-1) with a 2.95 ERA in 43 innings.

Curt Simmons took a no-hitter into the 6th inning and left fielder Del Ennis
homered and had 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies outscored the Pittsburgh
Pirates 6 to 2.
Simmons(4-10) pitched well for Philadelphia in their victory. He allowed 2
hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. The left-handed Simmons lost his
no-hit bid when Dick Groat singled with nobody out in the 6th inning.
Philadelphia had 13 hits overall, while Pittsburgh had 4.
Roy Face(6-6) ended up with the loss. Philadelphia scored big getting 6 runs

Johnny Logan had 3 base hits as the very potent Milwaukee Braves defeated the
St. Louis Cardinals in 12 innings 5 to 4 at Sportsmans Park.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Milwaukee came out the victor in the 12th
inning. Bobby Thomson led off and he reached on an error. Del Rice got his
turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Bill Bruton then doubled bringing
in a run. Danny O'Connell stepped in and he would hit into a fielders choice
scoring the final run of the inning. Milwaukee rapped out 8 hits for the
night.
The winning pitcher was Ernie Johnson(7-4) who allowed 1 run in 3 innings.
Harvey Haddix(10-11) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an
inning allowing 1 hit and no walks.
With this win, Milwaukee has a league leading 77-43 record. They have been
7-3 lately. With this loss, St. Louis has a 4-6 record of late, 49-68
overall.
Stan Palys walk off single gave the Redlegs a wild 8-7 win over the Cubs.

Ted Kluszewski jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI as the Cincinnati
Redlegs won at Crosley Field in dramatic fashion over the Chicago Cubs, the
final score, 8 to 7.
Cincinnati won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Kluszewski drew a walk. Wally Post came to the plate and doubled. Gus Bell
then was walked intentionally to load the bases. Stan Palys was up next and
he stroked a one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Cincinnati and a
raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. The game was a wild
affair with the lead changing hands 5 times.

Roy Campanella connected with a 'big fly' and had 4 RBI and Roger Craig tossed
a complete game at Polo Grounds where the incredible Brooklyn Dodgers beat
the New York Giants 14 to 6.
Campanella had a big evening at the plate. He doubled bringing in two
baserunners in the 1st inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 29th of
the season) in the 4th inning. Brooklyn rapped out 13 hits for the night.
The winning pitcher was Craig(4-1) who allowed 6 runs for the game. The losing
pitcher was Ray Monzant(6-2). He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in 1/3 of an
inning.

The St Louis Cardinals sent to triple A pitcher Floyd Wooldridge and called up pitcher Johnny Mackinson today.

The Milwaukee Braves placed starting pitcher Gene Conley back on the DL today. Conley, the 24 year old righthander, tried to come back from arm problems but was shelled in his only start since returning from the DL on August 13th. He finishes the season (11-7) with a 3.76 ERA in 158 innings and 21 starts.
