The powerful Brooklyn Dodgers tallied 6 runs in the 7th inning and defeated
the Milwaukee Braves by a score of 9 to 6 at Ebbets Field.
Brooklyn tallied 6 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 4 hits. The
crucial at-bat was provided by Gil Hodges who brought a roar from the
partisan Ebbets Field fans when he brought the hometown folks to their feet
with a Grand Slammer (his 28th of the season). Milwaukee had a chance in the
9th but they came up short.
Clem Labine(10-6) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Karl Spooner recorded his 1st save. Dave Jolly(2-2) was hit with
the loss in relief.
Charlie Grimm was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really
hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is
easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely
get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
Wally Post had 4 hits, a homer, and 3 RBI as the Redlegs outscore the Giants 8-5.

Bill Wight pitched 9 strong innings at Municipal Stadium as the Baltimore
Orioles beat the Cleveland Indians 2 to 1.
Baltimore scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Willie Miranda led off the inning
for Baltimore when he laced a base-hit. Wight stepped up next and he laid
down a sacrifice bunt. One out later, Cal Abrams stepped up to the plate and
he drew a walk. Dave Philley stepped in and he tripled which was good for
two runs. That was all the offense they were to need. Cleveland made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Wight(5-4), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Herb
Score(16-8) was the loser. 'Wight was the man today,' Paul Richards said.
'He had just about every pitch working.'
