Del Crandall rocketed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at County Stadium as the
powerful Milwaukee Braves beat the New York Giants by the count of 8 to
5.
It was a good day for Milwaukee thanks to Crandall. He lofted a solo-blast
'downtown' in the 2nd inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 23rd of the
season) in the 5th inning and banged out a single in the 7th inning.
Milwaukee finished with 12 hits in the victory.
The win went to Warren Spahn(14-5) who allowed 3 runs in 5 innings. Jim
Hearn(8-12) was charged with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 4 and
1/3 innings.
Gil Hodges homered and drove in 3 runs as the Dodgers down the Cardinals 8-3.

Roy Campanella left the yard and had 2 RBI and Don Newcombe was able to finish
what he started and was credited with a complete game as the mighty Brooklyn
Dodgers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8 to 3 at Sportsmans Park.
Brooklyn scored 5 runs in the 5th inning with the help of 3 hits. The key
at-bat was by Gil Hodges who silenced Sportsmans Park as he belted a
three-run homer (his 25th of the season). Brooklyn rapped out 10 hits for
the afternoon.
Newcombe(11-7) allowed 3 runs on the game. Luis Arroyo(7-7) was tagged with
the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs in 4 and 2/3
innings.
Brooklyn now has a record of a league leading 66-37. With the loss, the St.
Louis ballclub's record is 43-57.

ML transaction July 31st
The Cleveland Indians claimed Sal Maglie from the New York Giants on waivers. Maglie, known as "Sal the Barber", was 6-6 with a 4.51 ERA in 21 starts this season. Last year, for the pennant winners, he was 11-9 with a 3.70 ERA in 32 starts. In his 7th big league season, the 38 year old righthander was waived by the Giants to make room for some younger arms as the Giants look to have given up on repeating. The Tribe, although in a dire situation, are adding the veteran in hopes of repeating as World Series champs.
NL Transaction July 31st
The Chicago Cubs placed 38 year old catcher Clyde McCullough on the DL today. McCullough is in his 14th big league season, missing 2 years to WWII. He spent his 1st 7 seasons with the Cubs and then 4 years with the Pirates before returning to Chicago in 1953. The last two years have been spent in a reserve role. Last year he hit .221 with 2 homers and 6 RBI in 86 plate appearances. This year he was at .186 with 4 RBI in 89 plate appearances before his injury. It looks as though he will miss the rest of the year.
