George Crowe had 2 base hits at County Stadium as the dominant Milwaukee

Braves beat the hapless Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 4 to 3.



Milwaukee took the lead for good in the bottom of the 7th inning plating an

isolated run on 2 hits. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but Milwaukee was

able to put down the rally.



Warren Spahn(19-7) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Humberto

Robinson was credited with his 2nd save. Dick Hall(6-5) was tagged with the

loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings.














 

Stan Musial homered twice as the Cardinals doubled up the Phillies 6-3.

Stan Musial smashed 2 homeruns and Willard Schmidt held Philadelphia to 3 hits

at Sportsmans Park where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Philadelphia

Phillies by the score of 6 to 3.



Schmidt(7-4) was very good in the win. He was stingy on the mound, allowing

just 3 hits and 8 walks in 9 innings. St. Louis finished with 11 hits in the

victory.



Murry Dickson(10-12) was the loser. He served up 3 homeruns in his 6 and 2/3

innings. With this win, St. Louis has a 57-82 record. They have been 7-3

lately. With this loss, Philadelphia has a 4-6 record of late, 65-77

overall.












 

Gus Bell slapped a walk off single in the 10th inning as the Redlegs edge the Giants 2-1.

Joe Nuxhall pitched 9 strong innings as the Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the

New York Giants in 10 innings by the score of 2 to 1 at Crosley Field.



The score was tied at 1 after nine. Cincinnati came out on top in the 10th

inning. After two outs Wally Post reached on an error. Post took his lead

and swiped second. Gus Bell then singled making Cincinnati the winners and

sending the 11,392 fans home happy. Cincinnati had 10 hits for the game and

New York had 4.



Jackie Collum(9-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing

no runs. Marv Grissom(0-7) was the losing pitcher in relief.

Don Newcombe delivered 9 solid innings as the strong Brooklyn Dodgers

outscored the Chicago Cubs 3 to 0.



Newcombe(14-10) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Chicago offense.

He allowed only 5 hits and no walks in 9 innings. Neither team managed to

score after the 3rd inning.



Bob Rush(13-12) was the loser. He pitched 8 innings allowing 9 hits and 2

walks. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances today,' Stan Hack said.

'Newcombe just was too much for our guys.'












 

Frank Kellert had 2 hits, a homer, and 2 RBI as Brooklyn sweeps the doubleheader from the Cubs 8-3.

The Brooklyn Dodgers recalled 29 year old outfielder Walt Moryn. Moryn made his ML debut last season hitting .267 with 4 homers and 16 RBI in 84 plate appearances. This year he was 0-1 in one game back in April.

Center fielder Gus Bell had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Crosley Field where the

Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 8 to 7.



In the 5th inning Cincinnati scored 4 runs when they had 5 base hits. The big

moment was provided by Wally Post who made the crowd come alive when he

lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 38th of the season).

Philadelphia made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the

needed runs across.



The victory went to Rudy Minarcin(6-5) who went 1/3 of an inning, allowing no

runs. Hersh Freeman got the save, his 12th. The losing pitcher was Ron

Negray(3-4). He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 5 innings of work.














 

Harvey Haddix pitched a complete game striking out 10 as the Cardinals thumped the Giants 9-1.

Harvey Haddix racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts at Sportsmans

Park where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Giants 9 to

Haddix(12-12) delivered a fine performance for St. Louis. He allowed 11 hits

and 1 walk in 9 innings. Both teams totaled 11 hits on the night.



Windy McCall(7-6) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 5 runs in 4 and 2/3

innings of work. When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Haddix

offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the

strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy

tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'












 

Gil Hodges had 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 RBI and Brooklyn scored 10 runs in the 7th inning to coast over Milwaukee 14-6.

In a one-sided affair the phenomenal Brooklyn Dodgers batters pounded the

Milwaukee Braves pitchers for 14 runs while Roger Craig(5-1)with the help of

the bullpen allowed Milwaukee 6 runs.



Brooklyn jumped on top of Milwaukee in the top of the 6th inning scoring one

runner using 2 hits. Brooklyn had 13 hits for the afternoon while Milwaukee

had 9.



Bob Buhl(16-7) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 innings and

surrendered 6 hits and 3 walks.
