First baseman Ted Kluszewski launched 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the
Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 9
to 4 at Crosley Field.

Kluszewski was in a groove all day. He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 1st inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 6th
inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 18th of the season)
in the 8th inning. Cincinnati had 19 hits for the afternoon while Pittsburgh
had 12.

Joe Nuxhall(7-4) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Ron Kline(2-9)
absorbed the loss. Cincinnati scored big getting 6 runs off him in 4 and 1/3
innings.

'They made a couple of mistakes and I took full advantage,' Kluszewski said
'next time I'm sure they'll pitch me tougher.'

Rudy Minarcin was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the ice-cold Pittsburgh
Pirates 8 to 1 at Crosley Field.

In the 4th inning Cincinnati went on top for good scoring 2 runs. After two
were out Wally Post opened up the rally as he drew a walk. Gus Bell was next
and he blasted a two-run home run (his 12th of the season). Cincinnati had a
total of 11 hits for the game.

Minarcin(3-3) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Bob
Friend(2-5) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good,
giving up 6 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati now has a record of 30-27. Fred Haney was pretty down after the
loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 1-9 in the
last week or two. That won't get it done.'






 

Thornton Kipper threw 2 2/3 innings scoreless relief as the Phillies edge the Cubs 7-6 and sweep the doubleheader.

The Philadelphia Phillies offense put up 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd
inning and edged the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field by the score of 7 to
6.

Chicago was unable to recover after Philadelphia went ahead in the 7th inning
when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but
they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Thornton Kipper(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3
innings. Jack Meyer was credited with his 4th save. The loss was charged to
Hal Jeffcoat(2-5) in relief.

With this win, Philadelphia has a 30-32 record. They have been 4-6 lately.
With the loss, Chicago has a record of 5-5 lately, 30-34 overall.






 

Ron Negray in his 2nd ML start (1st was in 1952) tossed a 3 hitter as the Phillies run over the Cubs 8-1 in the 1st of two.

Ron Negray hurled a 3 hitter at Wrigley Field as the Philadelphia Phillies
beat the Chicago Cubs by the count of 8 to 1.

Negray(1-0) put on a good performance. He surrendered only 3 hits and 4 walks
in 9 innings. Philadelphia finished with 8 hits in the victory.

The losing pitcher was Jim Davis(2-1). He was knocked around, surrendering 5
runs in 4 and 1/3 innings. 'It felt really nice to get this win,' Negray
said. 'I kind of dictated the game. It's what I get paid to do. It worked out
this time.'






 

Hank Thompson had 3 hits, a homer, and 3 RBI as the Giants beat the Braves 6-3.

The New York Giants defeated the Milwaukee Braves by a score of 6 to 3 at
County Stadium.

Hank Thompson had a big day against Milwaukee. He lined a single in the 2nd
inning, ripped a solo home run (his 14th of the season) in the 4th inning and
doubled scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning. Both teams finished the
game with 12 hits.

Ruben Gomez(4-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Windy McCall got the save, his 1st. Lew Burdette(4-6) took
the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.







 

Duke Snider went 4-4 with his 17th homer as the Dodgers drill the Cardinals 10-5.
