NL Game recaps July 8th

Don Newcombe mowed down 10 New York batters and Don Hoak had 2 base hits at
Polo Grounds where the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Giants in 14
innings 6 to 4.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. Brooklyn won it in the 14th inning.
After an out was recorded, Clem Labine started the attack as he drew a walk.
Hoak came to the plate and drew a walk. After another out, Duke Snider
stepped in and he lofted a three-run bomb (his 19th of the season). The game
was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

The victory went to Labine(6-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. Labine
got help from Jim Hughes who was credited with his 6th save. Don Liddle(3-4)
was hit with the loss in relief. By surrending 3 runs in 1 inning his ERA
jumped from 1.99 to 2.49.


CHICAGO AT ST. LOUIS

Floyd Wooldridge went the distance as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago
Cubs by a score of 7 to 2.

Wooldridge(4-2) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He allowed only 7
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.90 to 3.27. St. Louis
had a total of 10 hits for the game.

The losing pitcher was Paul Minner(5-6). He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and
3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. St. Louis now has a record of 33-45. With the
loss, the Chicago ballclub's record is 39-44.

CINCINNATI AT MILWAUKEE

In a close game the Milwaukee Braves got by the Cincinnati Redlegs by the
score of 5 to 3.

Cincinnati never recovered after Milwaukee took the lead in the 3rd inning
when they tallied 2 runs on 4 hits. Cincinnati had a chance in the 9th but
they came up short.

Warren Spahn(10-5) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Ernie
Johnson was credited with his 4th save. Art Fowler(8-2) suffered the loss.
He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

Charlie Grimm was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only
we could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'

CINCINNATI AT MILWAUKEE

Rudy Minarcin allowed Birdie Tebbetts to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete
game and Bobby Adams had 3 base hits as the Cincinnati Redlegs defeated the
Milwaukee Braves by a score of 6 to 3 at County Stadium.

Minarcin(4-4) pitched a fine game. He went 9 innings allowing 8 hits and 8
walks. Cincinnati managed 12 in their victory.

The loss was charged to Lew Burdette(6-7). He was hit hard and gave up 12
hits and 4 walks in 8 innings.

PHILADELPHIA AT PITTSBURGH

Willie Jones collected 3 extra-base hits and had 3 RBI at Forbes Field where
the Philadelphia Phillies beat the lifeless Pittsburgh Pirates by the score
of 13 to 8.

Jones provided much of the offense. He doubled in the 2nd inning, doubled in
the 3rd inning and tripled clearing the bases in the 8th inning.
Philadelphia simply wore out the Pittsburgh pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings.

Herm Wehmeier(6-4) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 runs for the victory. Max
Surkont(4-8) absorbed the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 4
walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

In a tight game it was the Boston Red Sox 7, the struggling Baltimore Orioles
5 at Fenway Park.

Boston had the game winning rally in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs. Grady
Hatton led off the inning for Boston when he drew a walk. Jimmy Piersall
followed, but he was set down on strikes. George Susce then laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Billy Goodman stepped in and he was walked intentionally.
Billy Klaus came to the plate and doubled bringing in two baserunners.
Susce(3-3) got help from Ellis Kinder who pitched great and earned his 10th
save.

Don Johnson(1-6) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 3 and 2/3 innings
and surrendered 2 hits and 4 walks.

CLEVELAND AT CHICAGO

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago White Sox by a score of 6 to 3 at
Comiskey Park.

Bob Lemon(9-7) pitched a fine game. He went 8 innings allowing 8 hits and 6
walks. Both teams ended up with 8 on the night.

Lemon got help from Ray Narleski who earned his 9th save. The loss was
charged to Billy Pierce(8-4). He allowed 7 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 1/3
innings.

KANSAS CITY AT DETROIT

The Kansas City Athletics nipped the Detroit Tigers 6 to 5 at Briggs Stadium
in a hard fought contest.

Kansas City jumped on top to stay in the top of the 6th inning scoring 2
runners on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Joe Astroth who deflated the
spirits of the home town crowd when he blasted a two-run home run (his 5th of
the season). Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up
short.

The victory went to Arnie Portocarrero(5-2) who went 6 innings, allowing 3
runs. Tom Gorman gained credit for his 8th save. Billy Hoeft(9-7) absorbed
the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 5 and 2/3 innings.

'This was a tough loss,' said Bucky Harris, 'the kind that sticks with you for
awhile.'

NEW YORK AT WASHINGTON

Mickey Vernon had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Camilo Pascual hurled a 3 hitter
as the Washington Nationals topped the New York Yankees by a score of 7 to 2
at Griffith Stadium.

Washington did all the necessary damage in the 4th inning as they creamed New
York blasting them with 7 runs on 5 hits. The highlight belonged to Vernon
who electrified Griffith Stadium when he laced a one-base hit plating two
runs. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able
to score again.

Pascual(1-7) allowed 2 runs on the game. Tommy Byrne(4-4) was the losing
pitcher. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.

AL Transaction July 8th


The Detroit Tigers signed Joe Coleman as a free agent. Coleman, a 32 year old righthander had been released by the Orioles on July 6th. He was 10-15 with a 3.09 ERA last year in 224 innings pitched. This season the 10 year veteran was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in 12 innings.

 

AL Transaction July 8th


The Baltimore Orioles claimed George Zuverink from Detroit Tigers on waivers. Zuverink, a 30 year old righthander, was 8-13 with a 4.49 ERA last year over 210 innings pitched. In his 4th season this year, he has posted a 1-1 record with a 3.18 ERA over 28 innings pitched. Baltimore Skipper Paul Richards plans on using Zuvernik as a long reliever and spot starter.
