The New York Giants came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 4 to
3.

New York had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Monte Irvin started the
attack as he reached on an error. Willie Mays followed and he lined a
single. Hank Thompson then delivered a single to load the bases. Whitey
Lockman was up next and he stroked a base-hit which scored a run. Ray Katt
stepped into the box and banged out a one-base hit scoring the final run of
the inning. New York ended up with 10 hits for the game while Milwaukee had
6.

Hoyt Wilhelm(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Warren
Spahn(3-3) was tagged with the loss. After the game, it took a long while
before Charlie Grimm emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered
only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a
very talkative mood tonight, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll
find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the New York locker room.'
