Ray Herbert blanked Detroit allowing just 2 hits at Municipal Stadium as the
Kansas City Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 3 to 0.

Herbert(1-1) was virtually untouchable. He gave up just 2 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 7.20 to 2.57. Detroit was set down
quietly in the 9th.

Frank Lary(2-5) was the loser. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 7 hits
and no walks. 'Herbert gave us exactly what we needed tonight,' Lou Boudreau
said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really
fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'
