Billy Pierce whitewashed New York as the Chicago White Sox outscored the New
York Yankees 1 to 0.

Pierce(5-2) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much,
just 7 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 1.91. New York
threatened in the 9th but Chicago was able to put down the rally.

Whitey Ford(6-3) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up 6
hits and 4 walks. Casey Stengel was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It
was a manager's nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'
