NL Transaction June 10th

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed pitcher Bob Purkey on the disabled list and called up 24 year old twins Eddie and Johnny O'Brien.

Purkey was the Pirates most consistent starter this year with a 3-3 record and a 4.12 ERA. He started 10 games, completing three, tossing 68 innings. Last year he was 3-4 with a 3.63 ERA over 131 innings pitched.

Both Eddie and Johnny O'Brien had their rookie years in 1953 but spent last year at the Triple A level. Johnnie looks to play at 2B where the Pirates have struggled and Eddie will play both OF and IF according to Fred Haney, the Pirate skipper.
