WEB GEMS- Top 3rd: Hank Thompson robbed Bill Virdon of a base hit.

Hank Thompson blasted 3 homeruns and Sal Maglie blanked St. Louis in a very
well-pitched complete game as the New York Giants crushed the St. Louis
Cardinals 10 to 0.

Thompson had a great day at the plate. He had the crowd cheering his every
move. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 1st inning, emptied the bases with a
Grand Slam homerun in the 4th inning and belted a three-run homer (his 13th
of the season) in the 6th inning. New York totaled 9 on the afternoon.

Maglie(4-2) was credited with the shutout. Harvey Haddix(5-6) suffered the
loss. He was touched for 6 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

'Thompson led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,'
Maglie said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'
