In a good matchup it was the Washington Nationals 5, the Cleveland Indians 3
at Griffith Stadium.

Washington had 3 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning when
they had 4 base hits. Johnny Groth led off and keyed the rally when he
stroked a one-base hit. Clint Courtney next to the plate and he doubled.
Roy Sievers then doubled knocking in a run. Bobby Kline stepped in and he
was hit by a pitch. Dean Stone stepped into the box and laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Eddie Yost contributed to the rally and drew a walk to load
the bases. Ernie Oravetz came next and he delivered a single, and an error
was also committed, which accounted for two additional runs. Cleveland
threatened in the 9th but Washington was able to put down the rally.

Stone(4-5) got the win allowing 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Johnny Schmitz
gained credit for his 1st save. Bob Feller(3-2) was tagged with the loss.
He was knocked around by Washington, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 3 and
1/3 innings.

'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully
grim,' noted Chuck Dressen. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together
and turn things around!'
