Willie Mays cracked 2 homeruns and Marv Grissom went 3 strong innings as the
New York Giants beat the Chicago Cubs by a score of 5 to 3.
Mays led the offense for New York. He slapped a single in the 2nd inning, hit
a bases-empty home run in the 6th inning and cracked a solo homerun (his 21st
of the season) in the 9th inning. Grissom pitched a perfect ninth to earn
his 5th save.
Ray Monzant(2-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 6 innings. Warren
Hacker(1-6) was hit with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and no walks in 5 and
1/3 innings.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Lou Durocher said after the game. 'Monzant did not have command
of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
