AL Transaction June 21st

The Washington Nationals sent Bobby Kline and Tony Roig to Triple A and called up Jose Valdivieso.

Kline, a 26 year old rookie shortstop, was handling the bat well with a .254 average and 18 RBI in 44 starts. He was sent down due to his fielding miscues, 14 errors, and poor range. (Kline would never play in the majors again)

Roig, a 28 year old rookie infielder, was hitting .200 with 2 RBI in 59 plate appearances. This was his 2nd attempt to stick with the Nationals as he appeared in 3 games with 8 at bats in 1953.

Valdivielso is a 21 year old shortstop from Matanzas, Cuba. Nationals skipper Chuck Dressen said that Valdivielso will be the starting shortstop.
