One run was the difference at Griffith Stadium as the Washington Nationals
defeated the Kansas City Athletics 7 to 6.

Washington came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th
inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. After two were out Roy Sievers got things
rolling when he ripped a solo home run (his 6th of the season). Jerry
Schoonmaker stepped into the batter's box and he smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly' (his 1st of the season). Kansas City made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

The win went to Johnny Schmitz(5-4) who allowed 1 run in 4 innings. The loss
was charged to Tom Gorman(2-1) in relief. 'You have to give Kansas City
credit, they fought us tough to the end' Chuck Dressen said. 'It could have
gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'
