NL Transaction June 24th

In a suprising move the New York Giants sent Monte Irvin to Triple A today and recalled infielder Wayne Terwilliger.

Irvin, the 36 year old outfielder, was hitting .269 with 16 RBI in 52 games so far this year. For the last two weeks he had mainly been used as a pinch hitter as Skipper Leo Durocher has looked for ways to boost the Giants to last years pennant winning ways. As one of the first players to break the color barrier (debut was 1949), Irvin was in his 7th year with the New Yorkers and last year hit .235 with 15 homers and 63 RBI in 134 games for the NL Pennant winners.

Terwilliger, a 29 year old infielder, spent last season with the Washington Nationals hitting .204 with 3 homers and 18 RBI in 115 games. This is his 4th team in his 6 year big league career. Durocher plans on using him to spell slumping Davey Williams(hitting .173) at 2nd base.
