Billy Hoeft delivered 9 solid innings at Griffith Stadium where the Detroit
Tigers beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 6 to 2.

Detroit set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring 3 runs utilizing
5 base hits. Harvey Kuenn led off and he doubled. Bill Tuttle came next and
he hit a single scoring a run. After an out was recorded, Earl Torgeson
stepped up to the plate and he doubled driving in one more runner. After
another out, Jim Delsing came up and he laced a base-hit scoring the final
run of the inning. That early scoring was all that Hoeft(8-5) needed.
Detroit managed 11 in their victory.

Bob Porterfield(4-7) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits
and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. 'He came out with good stuff,' Bucky
Harris said about Hoeft. 'He threw the ball good from the first pitch on.'
