In a dramatic ending, the dominant New York Yankees staged a comeback win over
the Washington Nationals by the count of 7 to 5.

New York scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3
runs using 4 hits. Joe Collins led off and started the rally when he laced a
base-hit. Pedro Ramos then picked Rizzuto off first base. Gil McDougald
then delivered a single. Andy Carey followed and he lined a one-base hit.
Mickey Mantle came to the plate and rifled a three-run blast (his 23rd of the
season) making New York the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.
New York had a total of 12 hits for the game.

The win was credited to Tom Sturdivant(1-2) who went 2 innings allowing no
runs. The loss was charged to Ramos(0-4) in relief.

Casey Stengel was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought
game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see
the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this
afternoon!'
