Johnny Podres pitched a complete game and right fielder Carl Furillo went deep
and had 2 RBI at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers staged a comeback win
over the woeful Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 4 to 3.

Brooklyn came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Jackie Robinson led off and started
the rally when he tripled. Gil Hodges followed and he banged out a single
scoring a run. Furillo then lined a one-base hit. After an out was
recorded, Don Zimmer stepped in and he was walked intentionally to load the
bases. George Shuba stepped into the box and was hit by a pitch making
Brooklyn victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Both teams
totaled 7 on the night.

Podres(8-2) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Vern Law(5-7)
absorbed the loss. Walt Alston was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to
win a hard fought game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied.
And did you see the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable
win tonight!'
