The Detroit Tigers came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the
anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 2 to
1.

Detroit came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2
hits. After an out was recorded, Al Kaline started the rally when he lashed
a single. Earl Torgeson next to the plate and he drew a walk. Ray Boone
then doubled knocking home two runners. The game was a scoreless duel until
the 8th inning.

Billy Hoeft(9-6) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Al Aber
recorded his 4th save. Art Houtteman(1-4) was the loser. He allowed 2 runs
and 6 hits in 8 and 1/3 innings.

Al Lopez was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss.
He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse,
yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose.
Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on us
this afternoon'
