At Municipal Stadium the Baltimore Orioles ended a long winless drought and
outscored the pitiful Kansas City Athletics 9 to 6.

Baltimore took the lead for keeps in the 5th inning scoring 3 runs using 3
hits. After an out was recorded, Cal Abrams got things rolling when he drew
a walk. Dave Philley next to the plate and he doubled resulting in a run.
Gus Triandos then tripled plating one more runner. Hal Smith followed and he
doubled scoring the final run of the inning. Jim Wilson(6-8) was helped out
by George Zuverink who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 1st save.

Art Ceccarelli(4-6) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in
5 innings.

Art Ditmar threw a complete game shutout as the Kansas City Athletics defeated
the hapless Baltimore Orioles by the score of 4 to 0 at Municipal
Stadium.

Ditmar(4-6) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't give up
much, just 4 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Kansas City totaled 8 on the
afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Ray Moore(5-9). He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 6
innings.

BOSTON AT DETROIT

Ike Delock tossed a complete game at Briggs Stadium where the Boston Red Sox
beat the Detroit Tigers by the score of 3 to 2.

Boston brought 2 runs across the plate in the 6th inning. Detroit had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Delock(6-4), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Frank
Lary(5-11) was given the loss. Boston continued their winning ways, with
their streak now at 6 games and counting.

Right fielder Al Kaline slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at Briggs Stadium as
the Detroit Tigers came back dramatically to top the Boston Red Sox by the
score of 7 to 5.

Detroit erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning as
they scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. The highlight belonged to Kaline who made
the crowd happy when he blasted a two-run home run (his 20th of the season).
Detroit finished with 11 hits in the victory.

The victory went to Joe Coleman(2-0) who went 2 innings, allowing 1 run.
George Susce(3-4) was hit with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11
hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

'What a win!', Coleman said. 'These are the kind of games that stand out in
your mind at the end of a season.'

NEW YORK AT CLEVELAND

In a close game the New York Yankees got by the Cleveland Indians by the score
of 6 to 4.

Tommy Byrne(5-4) had a steady outing. He allowed 10 hits and 8 walks in 8 and
1/3 innings. New York had a total of 9 hits for the game.

Tom Morgan was credited with his 7th save. Bob Lemon(9-8) was the loser. He
surrendered 5 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.

'He gutted it out' Casey Stengel said of Byrne. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'

WASHINGTON AT CHICAGO

Catcher Sherm Lollar cracked a homer and had 3 RBI and Connie Johnson hurled a
fine complete game shutout at Comiskey Park as the Chicago White Sox, running on all cylinders, ripped the Washington Nationals by a large 10 to 0 margin. Johnson(2-1) put on a good performance. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 1.80 to 1.13. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again. Camilo Pascual(1-8) was tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the Chicago offense and allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.

WASHINGTON AT CHICAGO

Right fielder Jim Rivera had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Comiskey Park where the Chicago White Sox beat the Washington Nationals 7 to 3. Chicago tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning with the help of 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Rivera who made the crowd come alive when he delivered a base-hit plating two runs. Chicago had 14 hits overall, while Washington had 6. The win went to Dick Donovan(11-4) who allowed 1 run in 5 innings. Dixie Howell recorded the save, his 3rd. Ted Abernathy(4-4) absorbed the loss.
