Gail Harris had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the New York Giants defeated the
Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 3 to 2 at Polo Grounds.

New York tallied 2 runs in the 7th inning when they had 3 base hits. The
highlight belonged to Harris who electrified Polo Grounds when he slapped a
single bringing in two baserunners. Brooklyn had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.

Sal Maglie(6-4) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Marv
Grissom recorded his 8th save. Carl Erskine(8-8) suffered the loss. He got
hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Walt Alston 'But we
have to get over it and get ready for the next game.'

Catcher Walker Cooper homered and had 3 RBI and Howie Pollet tossed a complete
game as the Chicago Cubs outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 6 to
1.

Pollet(3-2) gave a fine effort for Chicago. He was reached for 7 hits and no
walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.40. Chicago had a total of 10 hits
for the game.

Luis Arroyo(5-6) took the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 and 2/3
innings.

CINCINNATI AT MILWAUKEE

Gus Bell hit a homerun and had 2 RBI and Joe Black allowed Birdie Tebbetts to
rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Cincinnati Redlegs defeated
the Milwaukee Braves 2 to 1 at County Stadium.

Black(5-0) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 7 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings lowering his ERA to 2.75. Both teams totaled 7 on the afternoon.

Gene Conley(9-6) absorbed the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up only 5
hits and 1 walk. With this win, Cincinnati has a 46-33 record. They have
been 7-3 lately. With the loss, the Milwaukee ballclub's record is 50-32.

Roy McMillan had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Jackie Collum pitched a complete
game as the Cincinnati Redlegs destroyed the Milwaukee Braves by a score of
12 to 2 at County Stadium.

Milwaukee never recovered after Cincinnati took the lead in the top of the 5th
inning as they scored 2 runs on 1 base hits. Cincinnati finished with 7 hits
in the victory.

Collum(3-2) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Chet Nichols(7-3)
ended up with the loss. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an
earned run in his 5 innings of work.


PHILADELPHIA AT PITTSBURGH

Bob Friend pitched a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6 to 1 at Forbes Field.

Pittsburgh took the lead off Curt Simmons in the first inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits. Pittsburgh rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.

Friend(5-7) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Simmons(2-7) was
charged with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 2
innings.

Willie Jones had 4 hits and 5 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings by the score of 13 to 10 at ForbesField. The score was tied at 10 after nine. Philadelphia came out the victor in the 11th inning. Peanuts Lowrey started the inning off right when he lined a base-hit. After an out was recorded, Bobby Morgan stepped in and he
delivered a single. Glen Gorbous then drew a walk to load the bases. Del Ennis followed and he hit a deep fly which plated a run. Jones came to the plate and doubled adding another two runs to their total. Philadelphia bats were very productive in the 3rd inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits and the 6th inning when they had 4 runs on 3 hits. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. Jack Meyer(6-7) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings and allowing no runs. Dick Littlefield(1-9) ended up with the loss in relief. He gave up 3 runs in 2 innings of work.
