Charlie Maxwell went yard and had 3 RBI and Frank Lary went the distance as the Detroit Tigers outscored the Baltimore Orioles 5 to 2. Lary(7-11) gave Detroit a solid outing. He went 9 innings surrendering 10 hits and 3 walks. Detroit managed 8 in their victory. Jim McDonald(1-6) suffered the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.





BOSTON AT KANSAS CITY

Ted Williams cracked a homer and Willard Nixon tossed a shutout at Municipal Stadium as the Boston Red Sox beat the hapless Kansas City Athletics 6 to 0. Nixon(6-6) was virtually untouchable. He gave up just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.32. Boston had only 5 hits for the game. The losing pitcher was Art Ditmar(4-7). The winning ways continue for Boston. They now have a record of 8-2 in recent days. With this loss, Kansas City has a 4-6 record of late, 31-58 overall.




NEW YORK AT CHICAGO

In a dramatic ending, the impressive Chicago White Sox staged a comeback win over the New York Yankees by the count of 4 to 3. Chicago had the game winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. George Kell led off the inning for Chicago when he drew a walk. Bob Kennedy came next and he delivered a base-hit. Sherm Lollar then reached on an error. Jim Brideweser stepped in and he reached on an error scoring a run. Chico Carrasquel came to the plate and slapped a single making Chicago the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Chicago and New York each finished the night with 7 hits. Sandy Consuegra(6-2) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Jim Konstanty(5-2) was the loser in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning. 'We just wouldn't give up,' Carrasquel said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole way.'


WASHINGTON AT CLEVELAND

Catcher Clint Courtney blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at Municipal Stadium where the Washington Nationals beat the Cleveland Indians by the score of 10 to 9. Dean Stone(9-6) earned his pay with a solid performance for Washington. He went 7 and 1/3 innings surrendering 5 hits and 5 walks. Cleveland had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Bob Lemon(9-9) absorbed the loss. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 walks.
