Right fielder Wally Post launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Connie Mack Stadium where the Cincinnati Redlegs beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 11 to 9. The Philadelphia fans didn't appreciate the big day Post had. He hit a single in the 1st inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 3rd inning and cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 23rd of the season) in the 6th inning. Philadelphia was not lacking for run support as they scored in 6 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. Steve Ridzik(1-3) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Hersh Freeman earned the save, his 7th. Robin Roberts(9-11) ended up with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 14 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Murry Dickson went 9 strong innings and Stan Lopata blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at Connie Mack Stadium as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Redlegs by the count of 7 to 1. Dickson(5-8) gave Philadelphia a solid outing. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and no walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 4.46 to 4.20. Philadelphia rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon. Joe Nuxhall(10-7) was the loser. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. 'Dickson took our guys to school' Birdie Tebbetts said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'



MILWAUKEE AT PITTSBURGH

Del Crandall smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Milwaukee Braves topped the lifeless Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 3 at Forbes Field. Crandall provided much of the offense. He lined a single in the 4th inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 7th inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 18th of the season) in the 8th inning. Milwaukee out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 12 hits to 8. The winning pitcher was Lew Burdette(8-7) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Burdette was helped out by Roberto Vargas who recorded his 3rd save.Vern Law(6-10) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.

ST. LOUIS AT NEW YORK

Don Mueller lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI as the New York Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 10 to 5. New York started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first as they scored 3 runs on 2 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Mueller who excited the crowd when he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 6th of the season). New York finished with 14 hits while St. Louis ended up with 7. Jim Hearn(8-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing 5 runs. The losing pitcher was Willard Schmidt(0-1) in his major league debut. He surrendered 4 hits and 3 walks in 1 and 2/3 innings.


ST. LOUIS AT NEW YORK

Larry Jackson went the distance and Nels Burbrink had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at the Polo Grounds as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Giants 8 to 5. St. Louis came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 6 runners on 5 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Ken Boyer who silenced the Polo Grounds as he laced a one-base hit plating two runs. St. Louis managed 8 in their victory. The victory was credited to Jackson(6-9) who went the distance, allowing 5 runs. Windy McCall(4-4) absorbed the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 5 hits in 7 innings.
