Dave Hillman went 6 strong innings at Connie Mack Stadium as the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 7 to 4. Hillman(1-0) had a solid outing for Chicago. He surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk in 6 innings lowering his ERA from 3.60 to 3.12. Overall Chicago out-hit Philadelphia 10 to 4. Howie Pollet gained credit for his 1st save. Saul Rogovin(0-1) took the loss. The Chicago ballclub's record now stands at 44-45. With the loss Philadelphia now has a record of 38-50.

First baseman Stan Lopata hit a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs 4 to 3 at Connie Mack Stadium. Bob Miller(4-2) did the job in relief, and he got credit for the win. He went 2 innings surrendering 3 hits and no walks. Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Robin Roberts recorded the save, his 2nd. Paul Minner(5-7) was hit with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Philadelphia now has a record of 39-50. With the loss, Chicago has a record of 6-4 lately, 44-46 overall.
CINCINNATI AT BROOKLYN

Rookie Roger Craig, in his 1st Major League start, pitched a complete game at Ebbets Field as the amazing Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Redlegs by the count of 5 to 1. Craig(1-0) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Brooklyn banged out 9 on the afternoon. Gerry Staley(6-8) was hit with the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 walks.

Right fielder Carl Furillo touched them all and had 3 RBI and rookie Don Bessent, in his 1st big league start, allowed 2 hits while blanking Cincinnati at Ebbets Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Redlegs by the count of 4 to 0. Bessent(1-0) dominated Cincinnati hitters. He allowed just 2 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 1.93 to 0.98. Brooklyn managed only 6 on the afternoon. Rudy Minarcin(4-5) was hit with the loss. He pitched 4 and 2/3 innings giving up 6 hits and 4 walks.
MILWAUKEE AT NEW YORK

Left fielder Whitey Lockman lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and scored 3 times and Johnny Antonelli pitched a complete game as the New York Giants beat the Milwaukee Braves by a score of 4 to 2. New York came up with 2 runs in the 7th inning. The key at-bat was by Hank Thompson who excited the crowd when he blasted a two-run home run (his 18th of the season). New York managed only 6 on the afternoon. The winning pitcher was Antonelli(8-6) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Gene Conley(9-7) was the loser. He allowed 6 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.
MILWAUKEE AT NEW YORK

Bobby Hofman cracked a homer and had 4 RBI and Rookie Paul Giel took a no-hitter into the 9th inning at Polo Grounds as the New York Giants beat the Milwaukee Braves by the count of 6 to 0. Giel(4-2) was simply too much for the Milwaukee batters. He gave up just 1 hit and 3 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 1.77 to 1.48. The right-handed Giel lost his no-hit bid when Bill Bruton singled with one out in the 9th inning. New York totaled 11 on the afternoon. Chet Nichols(7-4) was the loser. He pitched 5 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 walks. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Nichols was lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long night. Giel brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the entire game!

Rookie Gene Freese had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates staged a comeback win over the slumping St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 7 to 6. Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Dale Long keyed the rally when he ripped a base-knock. One out later, Freese came up and he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 3rd of the season) resulting in an exciting win for Pittsburgh and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all. Ron Kline(4-11) got the win allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Paul Lapalme(2-2) was given the loss in relief. 'What a win!', Kline said. 'These are the kind of games that stand out in your mind at the end of aseason.'





ST. LOUIS AT PITTSBURGH

Stan Musial had 2 base hits and Harvey Haddix racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the hopeless Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 0 at Forbes Field. Haddix(9-8) put on a good performance with his league leading 3rd shutout. He didn't give up much, just 10 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.52. St. Louis won despite being out-hit by Pittsburgh 10 hits to 6. Roy Face(4-4) was hit with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 4 hits and 4 walks. 'He was really impressive today,' Face said of his counterpart. 'Our guys were just swinging at air.'
